EDITORIAL MATTERS:

PUBLISHER'S NOTE

I am extremely happy to announce that I have just signed contracts with Arc Manor Publishers who will be reprinting some of my earlier, currently out-of-print works. The first will be Tom Paine Maru, The Venus Belt, and The Crystal Empire.

I will have more to say about each of these books later on. I'm grateful for the patience shown by all of who watched us fumble comically with republishing TPM ourselves. Arc Manor takes special care to produce high quality books at the lowest possible price. I have received and read a sample—a splendid novel by Paul Cook, The Engines of Dawn—and was very impressed. They're also doing some Frank Herbert, Poul Anderson, Andre Norton, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and a special favorite of my naughty youth, J.F. Bone's The Lani People.

I'll certainly let you know more as soon as I know more. Meanwhile, you might like to take a peek at their site, which is absolutely chock full of interesting stuff. Go to: http://www.arcmanor.com and especially to http://www.phoenixpick.com.

Thanks,

To End War, Prepare For Peace
by L. Neil Smith
On the other side of the economic, geopolitical, and military mess we find ourselves in right now (provided, of course, that we survive it), certain things that we have done routinely as a civilization—or that have been done to all of us—must be changed, radically and permanently.

Getting It
by A.X. Perez
For those of you who are too young to remember, Brown v. Board of Education shocked the segregationist South in ways unimaginable today. They went into denial and didn't think the Feds would enforce desegregation until the 101st Airborne showed up at Little Rock, Arkansas.

Party Like It's 1773
by Jim Davidson
This week the Boston Tea Party began endorsing candidates who accept our smaller government platform. Since our party is not yet on the ballot in every state, we are looking to candidates from all the other parties who are willing to agree that a smaller government at every level and on every issue, and a larger government at no level and on no issues, is best. In other words, we are looking for men and women who accept, as Henry David Thoreau said in 1848, that the first step toward a better government is for each of us to declare what would be a better government.

Milestones In Tyranny
by Francis A Ney Jr
In our nation's not-so-slow march towards fascism, I have a few milestones of note not mentioned elsewhere in our little part of cyberspace. First, the ACLU has announced that yet another supposed constabulary organization has been caught infiltrating and "investigating" terrorist assemblies. Peace protesters, anti-death penalty activists, and property rights advocates, for example. This time, it's the Maryland State Police.

Re, Re, Re... Victor Milan's Question?
by Michael Bradshaw
"The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers." (Shakespeare, Henry VI) Well, it seems that Victor Milan's letter in TLE #474 has stirred-up some controversy. He raises, as usual, a very good question: "Okay, do we want freedom, or do we want politics?

Personal Judgement
by A.X. Perez
If you make enough midnight runs to the store or ATM you are inviting trouble. That still doesn't change the need to run these errands. Some risks, like drunk or sleepy drivers only require alertness and the judgement to know whether to speed up, slow down, or swerve right or left. Hopefully you are awake enough (and sober enough) to have these qualities.
