Dear Editor, I'm sending this from the National Liberal Club, where the Libertarian Alliance conference is taking place. It is so far a very good conference. We have 122 people in the conference room, and 111 of these will be at dinner this evening. This makes the present one our largest conference of the 21st century—and perhaps our largest one since 1984. We will make a full video record of the Conference available on the Internet. At the dinner this evening, I will announce the winner of the Chris R. Tame Memorial Prize. But I will tell you now that the winner is Keith Preston, who wrote what I consider to be the best essay on the theme that I set. All of the essays submitted—and some of them are very good indeed—will be published either formally by the Libertarian Alliance or on the Libertarian Blog. Early voting Voted today (20 October, 2008). Was guided by Heinlein's thoughts. Voted against candidates I despised worst. Applied the principle that the difference between bad and worse more important than one between good and bad. Hopefully persons I had to vote for to vote against people I was trying to keep out of office don't start goose stepping in fascist modern uniforms or get caught raping goats and sacrificing virgins to honor supernatural beings with whom I'm quarreling. 'Twould be truly embarrassing. I'm pretty sure whoever wins will unintentionally spend the next few years convincing the American people to support anarchy or at least true libertarianism. I was looking for something to hang an article criticizing rights compliance bureaucracies as a threat to freedom. I picked on what would happen if the compliance Nazi's got it into their heads that left handers were a minority group that needed government protection. Safeties on pistols was simply one place to start. I supposed I could have picked on computer mice, water faucets, thumbstuds to open folding knives, whatever. I was not advocating anyone do anything on how pistols were designed. I agree with Mama Liberty and anyone else that the most important safety on any pistol (or dangerous tool or weapon) is located between the right and left ear. Sadly too many people want to use it too little. The enemies of liberty bank on this by promising to free people of the need to think for themselves. No. I'm not seriously worried about right hander backlash. Still, resentment of one group or another being given special privileges is one way tyrants keep people divided and thus easier to tyrannize. As for getting in more range time, that sounds like a great plan, money and weather permitting (not to mention time earning a living). The world is full of paper, metal, and other inanimate objects that insist on violating our rights and can only be dealt with by force. A.X. Perez
"They are privatizing profit and socializing costs." I have to admit not paying a lot of attention to the campaign and what-not since I decided not to vote, but this one about costs (alternately, risk) and profit has managed to barge into my consciousness lately. Usually it's given a solemn intonation, or said like a mantra, and has to do of course with the bailout(s). I've found it in Doonesbury, and other places not remembered. Funny thing, it's not just the combination of the two that gets them (the leftists making this intonation), but each part individually. Not only are distributed costs to be berated, but also private profits. In their eyes (if I may be so bold as to speak for them), the only right way to do things is to privatize costs and risk, and socialize profits; the exact opposite of what they are bemoaning in the Bush administration. That is, anyone who actually makes money should be taxed to death, despite the fact it is he who rightly takes on the costs and risks of a venture. Why not get rid of socialization altogether? Privatize costs and risks, and profits besides. And otherwise, mind your own damn business. But that would never be considered. Oh, well, back to being blase' about the silly season, and amused by people who get exercised about it. Bonneau's first law is that 90% of the world is bullshit.
