Dear Editor, Re: "A Dispatch from the Reality Wars" by Craig Goodrich With regard to Craig Goodrich on the auto industry, I am reminded that a Fiat-designed vehicle, the Yugo, also made a brief appearance in the USA. As I recall, it had a similar difficulty in falling apart. Something about the way in which the Obama-Fuhrer is determined to mate Fiat with Chrysler reminds me of Mussolini trying to get the trains to run on time—so Hitler could use them to take people to the camps. Please help me stop HR 875. In its current form, the bill would prevent small local organic farms and community gardeners from growing and selling you nutritious, truly fresh, organic produce. The bill would effectively ban small farming and outlaw organic gardening. It would crush our small local food producers by imposing heavy government regulation that only large corporations could adhere to. Imagine: No more farmers markets. No more garden fresh, seasonal ingredients from the local farmer at your favorite restaurant. No more roadside stands with fresh picked sweet corn, juicy ripe tomatoes, or refreshing watermelons in the summer. Americans would essentially be forced to only eat corporately manufactured, chemically treated, hermetically sealed, irradiated fruits and vegetables. Stop this abomination now. To prevent this bill, act now by signing the petition!:

I think it is suitable for use in The Libertarian Enterprise if you guys want to republish it. I think Tom Knapp's candidacy for president is a worthy cause. He would make a heck of an LP candidate compared to some of the recent slime (Browne, Barr, etc.). His idea for a shadow cabinet is an excellent one, I think. I would love to see L. Neil Smith appointed as director of whatever the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and explosives has become, for example. Neil could reduce the fees charged, destroy certain databases, and do all kinds of good things for freedom. Tom may have a ready-made essay on the concept of a shadow cabinet. This page might be it. It seems to me that ShadowCabinet.us offers a great tool for showing how libertarians would run things differently, implement new policies, and restore freedom and prosperity. Regards, Jim Davidson
The ABC Evening News did a promo piece on Friday 10 April for their 20/20 report Entitled "If I Only Had a Gun." This piece emphasized that most people are inadequately trained and would be relatively ineffective in preventing a nut case or terrorist from perpetrating a massacre. I agree with this statement. I got the implication that therefor we s should not arm ourselves. Here I disagree. The solution to lack of training is more training, not don't even try. I therefor propose that as long as we insist on having mandatory public education six years (7th through 12th Grade) of gun handling skills and tactics should be a requirement to graduate. 15 semester hours of weaponscraft should also be required to graduate college. Degrees should be offered in general weapon skills and tactics and as well as specialized degrees in pistol, shotgun and rifle handling. This includes baccalaureate, masters, and doctorate, degrees. These degrees should include studying the work of Jeff Cooper, George Santayana, Thomas Jefferson and others. That works of moral philosophers should be included in recognition of the fact that the gun confers great power and "with great power goes great responsibility." We can surrender to ignorance and sink to a level of intellectual inferiority that will make any tyrant who comes along and saves us from ourselves will be doing us a favor. Or we can seek all the training, education, and intellectual advancement we can handle. I suggest hitting the books and range. A.X. Perez
Dear Gun Enthusiasts, It seems to me, though only vaguely and not in a very definite way, that we stopped seeing as many of these shooters going wild and slaughtering half a dozen or more people after the end of the Clinton administration. Here it is the beginning of Obamania and sure enough, a prominent event takes place where a shooter kills a bunch of people. Was I simply unaware of the persistent massacres by crazed shooters during the Bush admin, or is this something we can expect from any Democrat in the White House? Those of you who follow the issue more closely might have a better sense of whether we are seeing the continuation of a trend, or the re-initiation of something that had stopped happening for a time. I admit to being ignorant of news stories generally. Some on this list review news fairly regularly though, so I thought to inquire. Regards, Jim Davidson
To which Curt Howland replied: Jim, No, they didn't stop. I haven't done any search of news to determine the rate, but at the very least I remember Virginia Tech, and a "mall" shooting where the perp went through a remarkable change while walking between cameras from stoop shouldered generic guy to upright, well armed and precise commando. What I have noticed is a change in attitude. One month after Obama took office, the state of Missouri publishes their "Report on Modern Militias" which, save for mentioning Ron Paul, could have been written in 1994. Everything in it was exactly what was used to destroy the Constitutional Militia idea the last time a Democrat was in office. As has been said before, each president, given time, makes us look back at his predecessor as not having been all that bad. With all that said, I think CCW and open carry are more important now than ever, because if you're right we're due for a flurry of need for them. Curt Howland
From time to time you will hear or read me claiming the government should actually earn its tax money and actually use its power to protect the people's rights. Of course, no one should let go of the right and responsibility of protecting their freedom for themselves, accepting but not being dependent on help from any quarter. Do not be silly enough to believe I am not actually expecting to have the government act on this, but by sounding off on this three things may be accomplished. The first comes under "the horse may sing." There is always the possibility that the government will actually act to enforce right rule s and spend so much effort on it that they don't have time to act tyrannically. I doubt this will happen, but you never know. Secondly, political leaders really don't believe in the idea that they rule by our consent and only if they meet the conditions we have set on that consent. They believe they rule because of some natural superiority over those they rule that backed by force entitles them to rule. By raising Cain about requiring our rulers to keep their part of the social contract we reject this thesis. Thus we deny the consent of silence to tyranny. Finally there is the possibility that the struggle between freedom and tyranny will explode into civil war in this Nation. Twice in the Declaration of Independence Jefferson speaks of the Americans attempting to assert their rights by means of peaceful petition and attempting to work with the British to peacefully, amicably and equitably resolve the differences between the Colonies and the Mother Country. If there is civil war let us document or efforts to peaceably assert our rights, both God given and generated by the social contract creating this nation and our enemies' failure to respond. Let the blood guilt be undeniably theirs. There is nothing to lose by getting after those who see themselves as America's rulers to use their power to defend our rights as they have promised to do.
