Gag the Internet! Obama Official's Frightening Book About Curbing Free Speech Online

When it comes to the First Amendment, Team Obama believes in Global Chilling.

Cass Sunstein, a Harvard Law professor who has been appointed to a shadowy post that will grant him powers that are merely mind-boggling, explicitly supports using the courts to impose a "chilling effect" on speech that might hurt someone's feelings. He thinks that the bloggers have been rampaging out of control and that new laws need to be written to corral them.

Advance copies of Sunstein's new book, On Rumors: How Falsehoods Spread, Why We Believe Them, What Can Be Done, have gone out to reviewers ahead of its September publication date, but considering the prominence with which Sunstein is about to be endowed, his worrying views are fair game now. Sunstein is President Obama's choice to head the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. It's the bland titles that should scare you the most.

Reply to Jim Davidson's libelous letter of June 28, 2009

Jim Davidson, having been booted from this blog ...has taken it upon himself to befoul TLE.

While I realize that Jim Davidson has no apparent purpose in life but to bemoan the universe which has conspired against him, I thought TLE was above publishing his continued libel that I have "stolen" his $25.

[We publish "controversial" stuff when the controversy seems relavant. I'm gonna stop, though.—Editor]

The former $25 FSW membership donation was just that: a donation. It did not purchase anything, much less FSW Forum access (which is free, and unrelated to FSW membership). I am not obliged to refund it, though I have in special cases done so. Until that blog:

"I was unaware, until now, of any request for a refund, as Jim could have always mailed me a note asking for his $25. He should still do so, including his domestic mailing address (from which I can get evidence of receipt). I'm not sending his M.O. to get lost in some Central American country."

[...]

The whole April 2008 flap with him, the June event, and the FSW forum is described in the below links, if anybody truly cares.

readable by the public

readable by FSWers

The FSW Forum is private property, as is the FSW trademark. "Censorship" does not apply within private property. Any self-professed champion of liberty such as Davidson should know that.

Mr. Davidson has a fair beef about being kicked out of a forum he paid money to join and not getting at least a partial refund. If you pay money and the recipient cannot or refuses to deliver promised service(s) whether explicitly or implicitly offered he should pay a refund.

His complaints and references to other people's racism reminds me of an event in 1967. A white parent of a student enrolled at Jesuit High School in El Paso went to complain to the principal. The conversation reported to me went more or less as follows:

Parent: There's a Black kid in class with my son!

Principal (I believe it was Fr. Morris Duffy SJ): So?

Parent: What are you going to do about it?

Principal: If you want to fill out withdrawal papers we'll refund your tuition payment.

A) I've always been proud of the Jebbies for that one.

B) I am sure Mr. Davidson is closer to the side of the angel's than the parent in question. Nevertheless both had paid money for an expected service. If an evil person gets a refund, shouldn't a righteous man?

I added Afghanistan numbers to the coalition forces counter at obamabodycount.org. The old coalition forces counter, obcm.png, still works as before, showing only the Iraq number, but there's a new counter, obcma.png, that shows both Iraq and Afghanistan. Instructions at the site for updating your HTML. It makes it clear at a glance that the war has moved back to Afghanistan.

If you got this, it's because you're a friend that I think has at least libertarian tendencies. I don't normally do bulk stuff, and I may never do it again, but I found this (of all places on the lolcats website) and it was too funny to pass up.

I'll also take this opportunity to let you know that I'm trying to regularize my professional activities (reading, writing, speaking, acting, singing) because they're way more interesting than anything else I am or could be doing to make money. I'm going to deal with them all through a website (which I haven't set up yet) and a company (for tax purposes). So if you receive mail from True North Communication (I'll probably register it as a ".ca" website) or email from truenorthcomm.1776@gmail.com don't throw it in your spam basket—unless, of course, your take is that I've spammed you.

Anyway, enjoy! And keep laughing at the bastards: it's what they deserve.

So let me see if I get this straight. Dick Cheney ordered the CIA not to tell anyone about a study for a potentially illegal intelligence operation. Where did the vice president, whose Constitutionally appointed duties are to preside over the Senate and twiddle his thumbs waiting for the President to die or otherwise become unable to carry out his duties get the authority to tell anyone to do anything?

Second question. The UN is mad because the current president of Iran was elected illegally. They are also angry because the president of Honduras was overthrown and replaced legally for trying to violate that nations constitution. so the UN, not a nation's people and power elite will now choose the world's heads of state and government? will the next American President be chosen by the American people through the electoral college or by the UN General assembly?

My buddy A.X. Perez is letting me do the heavy lifting this week because apparently the loonies have taken over the asylum. And they didn't even invite me to the party!

And lo, it came to pass that the emperor did parade through the streets of the city so that the people might see the new clothes their taxes had purchased. And though the Emperor was nude no one spoke to complain, for it was said that whoever could not see the clothes was a traitor. Besides, the emperor was in fact an empress, so fair of form and figure that, to misquote the Mabinogion, she was so dressed better than if in the finest raiment. In a word, she was built like a brick outhouse. The men rejoiced and the women planned new diet and exercise regimes. When a child, too young to be capable of treason, nearly said something he was quickly silenced so that the people could continue to enjoy the floor show.

Even the most unjust government can and will do the occasional thing that gains and deserves support. If our Empress (I visualize an idealized Jessica Biel as drawn by Vargas or Boris Vallejo) also reduced taxes as low as she could without provoking rebellion by he bureaucracy and army, guaranteed the rights of her people, and got rid of buttinski laws the way she did her clothing, then she deserves support. The wholeheartedness of the support she deserves depends on how well she uses her power to help her people protect and enjoy their liberty. Too many governments barely deserve forgiveness, even with a real stotter dressed in her God given glory and not much else fronting for them.

Back around World War II C.S. Lewis wrote The Screwtape Letters. The conceit in this short book is that a more senior devil in Hell's bureaucracy (Screwtape) is advising his nephew on how to tempt a human into damnation. In it Lewis has Screwtape saying words to the effect that God claims rulership of the Universe as its Creator, however Satan will soon overthrow that claim with his own as the Universe's conqueror.

Satan wishes to claim rulership of the Universe as its Conqueror, not its creator. Currently every ruling group on Earth is deriived from Conquerors, not Creators. Every ruling group derives its power from basically a Satanic viewpoint.

Every group that claims to rule in God's name lies. It may be that some rulers, repentant of their sinful origin, rule in a way consonant with God's wishes. However, ultimately their power comes from being the best thieves, rapists, and murderers around.

It is up to us to remind them with what the founding fathers called manly vigor that they must hold back on what comes natural and buy rather than forcibly seize the power they so desire. In that way will we be bringing God (or at least what people who respect others' rights consider Godly behavior) back into government.

Well, they've got a smoking gun (rather smoke aromatic black Cavendish pipe tobacco m'self). A Barrett .50 BMG was captured in a gun fight in Mexico and traced to an unlicensed dealer in the US. Clear evidence that Mexican drug lords are being armed by American criminals.

It would make better agitprop for the antigunners if the illegal dealer in question wasn't an FBI agent. Yup, the only people victim disarmers say should have guns are the people selling them to the criminals.

The inmates have taken over the asylum and they didn't invite me to the party!

Remember when "welfare bums" were not multibillionaire investment bankers?

And one more time, the loonies have taken over the asylum and they forgot to invite me to the frakkin' party!
