1776 Part Deux, Is It Time??

Special to The Libertarian Enterprise

I wrote this a few months ago. It is even more relevant today then it was.

"When in the course of human events" begins THE most important document in the history of this country. It is the ONLY document we have that was adopted unanimously by every state/colony in existence at the time. It set forth the legitimate reasons the 13 colonies set forth as the justification for open revolt against the established government. Among the mentioned grievances were two that stick out in my mind as relevant in todays America. They are as follows.

"He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance" For the last twenty or so years, "CZARS" have become the political rage. These czars are appointed (CREATED) to run new offices, given powers and salaries, and the abilities to create regulations that "eat out their substance" by removing money (taxes, fees, penalties, and passed on price increases necessary for companies to recoup their losses) from the American citizen.

"For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent" This one becomes a little tricky, as we technically have "Consent" through our elected representatives. My opinion on this is easy to explain, but may be murky to those who have not yet thought it out this way. Well, HERE WE GO!!!

How many times have you said "Hell, I voted for that guy, but that isn't what he SAID he was going to vote for." How many times, thanks to the Electoral College, Has every vote cast for one candidate or another wound up discarded thanks to a slim majority of cast votes? When a candidate wins by an Electoral landslide, but only by a slim popular vote margin. How many people have you heard say "Why should I vote? You know that NYC votes mostly Democrat, and the city has more votes than the rest of the state." While this statement is not, strictly speaking, true it does have it's salient points. Often, as it is here in rural Steuben County, NY, the majority of presidential votes never get to the candidate because of the 3-4 cities that carry the most people overrule the rural votes. This is the reason for the whole Red State/Blue State maps you see on the news on election night. Personally, I NEVER fail to vote, but I know many who do not even register because they "know" their vote will be simply a waste of time. And to be truthful, as it stands today, they might well be right. How many times have you heard people say "If you do not vote for a Democrat or a Republican, you are wasting your vote." This is true, for two reasons. (I NEVER VOTE R or D, I AM A LIBERTARIAN) Unless a candidate is registered in enough states to theoretically carry the votes electorally speaking, they do not even make it to the national ballot. And, in the event of no one reaching a majority of Electoral votes, these people would never even be considered as possible candidates in the House of Representatives, the deciding group in the case of a tie, or insufficient Electoral votes received. Since the House is crewed almost entirely with Democrats and Republicans, what are the odds that a third party candidate would get the nod no matter the number of electoral votes received.

So, when do we start the revolution? Hopefully, on Tuesday, November 2, 2010. Location for the first blow? Your local polling place. Starting now, we all need to push good people, honest people, and most important trustworthy people who will vote the way they promise, each and every time, no matter the influence pushed upon them, or the incentives offered them to change that vote. Impossible, you say? No, it really isn't. You already know the first one to nominate. He's the guy that always ticks you off by saying something, then sticking with it even when it inconveniences him, because "My word is my bond" is more than a catch-phrase. Or the woman down the road who will never tell even a "little white lie", and has offended a neighbor or twenty with comments like "I'm sorry, Mabel, but that shirt just looks hideous on you", and it is not to be mean, it is just because she can't stand to lie even a little. Do my examples seem a little trite? I sure hope so, because people like this are the backbone of this country. Hey, are YOU the person in your neck of the woods? Any skeletons in your closet? They will not necessarily stop you, if YOU are the one to bring them out. I do not care what your politics are, as long as you stick with them. Never give your word unless you mean it. Never go back on your word once you give it. Keep every promise you make. You WILL NOT succeed right away, so never promise what you can't deliver. An example, you ask? Okay, how about this. If I am elected, I will force the repeal of the Gun Control Act of 1938. While, if you are pro-gun (as I most certainly am) this statement will get you tons of votes, unfortunately, as a 1st term Congressional Representative, impossible to fulfill. Now, the right way to make a promise you CAN keep. If elected, I will vocally oppose all further restrictions on gun ownership presented, and I will never vote for any of them. I will endeavor to convince my fellow Representatives to do the same, and maybe we can stem the tide of 2nd Amendment rights being eroded. Of course, many of you may not be pro-gun, but you can see the way to work it. Promise reality, not fantasy, AND KEEP YOUR WORD. Winning is the ultimate goal, but simply by being there, and keeping your word, you win even if nothing you want done gets accomplished the first time. You win by showing others how a real man or woman behaves. You win by showing others that people who aren't scumbags and liars can go to Washington and remain human.

As you may be able to tell, I am rather extreme in my opinions, and I tend to stick rather firmly to what I feel is right. BUT, I can assure you, I will support a person who represents almost nothing I support but who keeps their word over a person who says they believe everything I do and then does the opposite when crunch time comes.

So, my fellow revolutionary, shall we all work towards this simple goal of a peaceful revolution, to remove the Electoral College. So that we may then get back on the road towards a true, democratic republic, removing many if not all of the roadblocks the liars, cheats, and turncoats in Washington DC have placed in the road towards freedom? To re-assert that "we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor" to work to avoid a fracturing of this formerly great nation, but rather to restore that former greatness and, indeed, increase it manyfold so that we may pass on to our posterity every gift this nation is capable of bestowing, and without stealing it from others in order to do so.
