Take heart, Don: Detroit, as described and depicted in that Guardian article you sent me is not America. Detroit is a misplaced section of the Third World. Even so, the problems that have destroyed it can be expressed in two words: taxation; regulation. They can be solved with one word: repeal. Go to today's TLE and read my articles "The Plan" and "A Letter to Ron Paul". These are themes I will pound on throughout the coming year. I want Obamafascism out and I expect Republicans to remember why they got elected this time. My voice may be small, but it is very, very annoying. I can always use some help, though, being annoying. I can not make this up I lack the imagination to make up the following: This is an article originally printed in the Washington Post the 29th of December, 2010 and reprinted in the El Paso Times the 2nd of January, 2011. For those of you who have trouble finding the link (and sometimes the net gets fussy) the article in question deals with the fact that in Mexico there is on gun store for the whole country, in Mexico City (the Capital), on a military base. I am especially tickled by the following: "Daniel Mendoza has come to shop at Mexico's only gun store with a friend. He is interested in something to protect his family. He described himself as a middle-class businessman and was vague about prior gun ownership. "Asked whether Mexico's gun-control laws were working, Mendoza said, 'Ask the criminals.'" Take that how you will. BTW, in El Paso, on the American side of the border, there are two gun shops, three sporting goods stores (two of which only sell long guns, one also sells handguns) and a Wal Mart selling long guns less than ten minutes drive from my house (assuming decent traffic, which is a major assumption). There were two murders with handguns within El Paso City limits in 2010, one murder with a shotgun in Fort Bliss, and one murder with a pistol during a robbery in a strip joint just outside the city limits on I-10. There were thee other murders in El Paso, one beating, one stabbing, one deliberately or recklessly running a person over. The other border cities in Texas have similarly low murder statistics. These rates are lower than comparable American cities away from the border. Remember, this is in Texas where there is no registration of guns or license to buy. Admittedly our pistol carry laws leave a lot to be desired, but they are still more reasonable than New Jersey's, or Chicago's, for example. Seriously, gun control doesn't work. It doesn't work in Mexico, it doesn't work in the American Rust Belt or anyplace else in the US. Unless, of course your goal is to make honest people easy picking for criminals, including the kind with badges or in office. A.X. Perez

In all sobriety and earnestness I ask the following question: How big would the US GNP have to get to pay off the national debt in ten years? I know a lot of you guys are inclined to repudiate or have other issues with the validity of the debt, but given governmental prolifigacy, if we could not get out of paying debt and had to pay in full in ten years and could only pay 45% of our income to taxes (no tax raises) how big GNP would we need to generate the tax revenues to do so? Sure the answer is scary, and is impossible, but what's the number? crazy al
To which L. Neil Smith replied: Thanks, Al, I've been meaning to write about this for some time. Here's a start. Increasingly, I intend to demand repudiation of the debt, especially as the great bulk of it was accrued deliberately and corruptly, to benefit the lenders, whose puppets sit in Congress. But to answer your question: the GNP can never get large enough, since attempting to pay the debt would destroy us as a civilization. I'm not sure you could call the result anything as tidy as a civil war. The people are better armed right now than at any time in history. The government has death rays, sonic disruptors, and something that causes birds to fall out of the sky and fish to die by the thousands. And while we struggle for life and death among the ruins, United Nations "peacekeepers" would arrive on the east coast to "help" us out of anything we have left, while the Chinese—backed up by orbital weapons platforms and a moon base capable of "throwing rocks"—would land on the west coast with much the same thing in mind. The subsequent war between them, to carve out "spheres of influence" from San Diego to Atlanta would be the end of everything for us. Repudiating the debt is dangerous enough. To which A.X. Perez replied: Yeah, that's what I thought. I brought it up trying to imagine how much wealth we would have to generate to: A. Have no deficit. B. Pay 1.4 trillion dollars year for the next ten years without raising taxes. C. Do the above on private sector money only. As I suspected the sums involved are somewhere between absurdly insane and Cthulhu has returned and destroyed all sanity totally fucking nuts. On the other hand we would have to develop lunar colonies, settle the asteroids and Mars, create so many jobs that we would have all but zero percent unemployment (truly unemployable persons and people new in town who hadn't had time to apply for job basically.). The standard of living would have to rise to the point of unimaginable luxury. So what if we do these things and dunp the parasites anyhow? crazy al
