THE LIBERTARIAN ENTERPRISE Number 610, March 13, 2011 "Much food for thought" Special to The Libertarian Enterprise You have to give it all up: fear; doubt; uncertainty. You have to free your mind. Free your mind, the rest will follow. Disobey. Break your chains. You do not find purpose. You choose purpose. You sit, you think, you write, until you have a purpose in life. For example, my purpose is to make humanity a multi-planetary species for fun and profit. I chose this purpose in 1989. I had an inkling, but was not then certain, that to achieve this purpose I would have to make fundamental alterations in how people were governed. At the time, I thought the key was to change how people *think* about space. Thus the Space Travel Services ultimate adventure sweepstakes. And my discovery that everything which is not permitted is necessarily forbidden. Which was followed by my 15 year search for a free country, and my realisation that there are no free countries. And so we have to make a free country, if we mean to be free. Yes, I'm summarising and putting into a nutshell rather a lot of events, trauma, loneliness, circumstances. And I've given short shrift to sitting in awe in 1968 listening to Frank Borman read from an ancient text while orbiting the Moon. I've not mentioned joining the L5 Society in 1977, or the committee against registration and the draft in 1978. You think you're lonely? I think you are, too. And I know something of loneliness. I know what it is like to be waiting for twenty years for people to wake up, to come to their senses, to see the espionage agencies for the poison they are, to see the wars for the waste of lives they are, to see the profits being made by the maniacs in power. And after twenty years, in 1998, finding nearly no one was awake. Going and looking for those people from 1991 to 2006, all over the world, and wondering why there were so few. I know why you feel alone. It is the question that drives you. You know the question, just as I did. Why? Why are things this way? Why have things been structured this way, with such disdain for so many lives ruined by the laws, ruined by the debt peonage, ruined by the wars, ruined by the system? Who benefits, and why can't they be more imaginative, and derive the same benefits without so much suffering? Every man and every woman feels, from time to time, like spitting on her hands, raising the black flag, and slitting throats. But for that feeling to make sense, there has to be some reasoning behind it. You know things are terribly unfair. You feel alone, beset on all sides by idiocy, by a system which makes no sense, by a system which you seem to be powerless to change. And you have no idea what to do. And I can assure you, I don't have any idea what to do, either. The best ideas I've had is to found a university to bring together the best minds I can find to think of what else to do.
