Special to L. Neil Smith's The Libertarian Enterprise

I don't usually advocate military intervention, but I am aware of a country that would seem—by our government's standards—to desperately need it.

This nation has one of the largest standing armies in the world. They spend an enormous portion of their GDP on their military, and on devising new and more dangerous WMD. While claiming their love of peace, they routinely bully or invade other nations.

Ideologically, they are a very fanatically religious nation, invoking their deity at the start of their government functions, and printing their beliefs on their currency. Those who are not of the national faith are routinely discriminated against. The faith influences the laws made, attempting at all times—and mostly succeeding—to enact their moral code into law.

Their people are oppressed in general. From birth they must be identified, numbered and registered, they are told how to raise their children, where they can be schooled, what professions they can or cannot do, what businesses they can or cannot operate, they need ID to travel by train, plane, automobile or bus.

Like the former Soviet Union, their elections are a farce where you can choose between two parties that are as similar as the choices between the "All Communist Party" and the "United Communist Party".

Their government has unlimited power to watch, monitor and spy on their people, can enter their homes with no warrant, can detain them with no warrant, and can torture them at will.

This nation has practiced genocide, and has routinely performed medical experiments on minority segments of its population. It has used poison gas on its dissidents, even students. It has bombed entire neighborhoods of its citizens, and burnt out churches not of the correct faith. It has forbidden the religious practices of the non-approved faiths, even those that harm none.

And, to top it all off, this nation is very oil wealthy.

I would, in this one case, advocate that we militarily intervene, so as to "free" them. But regrettably our military already occupies that nation. Because that nation is ours, the United States of America.
