The Hunger Games, A Brief Review

Because I write and prepare media for a living now (instructional manuals—GAG!!), I really don't like to read or watch movies any more. Add to that the way Hollywood fucks everything up, and I just don't have time to live vicariously through folks I find offensive and stupid.

My son, Austin, is a "moviephile". And a "bookphile". He wants to be a movie producer, and I've been trying to get him to pay attention to L. Neil Smith's books. Thing is, he's deaf; he doesn't approach anything the way you and I would, and I don't know any deaf playwrights, etc., who could provide insight.

Anyway, we watched The Hunger Games last week. I knew nothing about it, but I was very surprised by the elements, the theme, the warnings. Last night Austin was asking me about Washington, DC—about its status as a state, district, city. And I explained to him why the district is NOT supposed to have more than tangent representation; that if it enjoyed statehood, there would be nothing to keep elected officials from loading the place with populations and passing laws that would give the district inordinate power over the rest of the country, centralizing all the money, all the culture, all the power and abusing the rest of the country, just like in that movie The Hunger Games.

I had never really given it much thought, but now it makes a whole lot of sense. The next time those dumb-asses start pushing for more representation for Washington, D.C., I'm definitely going to say something.
