Birmingham—This morning, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) issued a Notice of Violations to the City of Birmingham for killing 11,760 watercress darters, an endangered species protected by the Endangered Species Act, and also for injuries to some 8,900 additional darters. The Service is seeking a civil penalty totaling $2,975,000. This is one of the largest fish kills in the history of the Endangered Species Act.

So who's at fault in Ferguson? That's for the courts in Missouri to decide? What lessons do the events there have to teach the rest of the nation? That's a different story, and perhaps one worth exploring. Sadly, they all sound like "I told you so."

Neale's Weekly Gun Rant Volume 8-24-2014
by Neale Osborn
This week, from Mama Liberty we have some damn bad news, in the form of a Claire Wolfe column. Let me preface this with a brief bit of info—Backwoods Home magazine is one of the most balls to the wall, hardcore "Leave me the fuck alone!!" magazine for the libertarian thinker, even if you do not want to live off grid. Now, to the meat of the matter. As many idiots have had to be reminded, I do not support the NRA because it does not stand for me. The NRA makes a shit pot of money off of people who donate to the NRA/ILA in the false belief that the NRA is the only group fighting the Anti-Constitutionalist Victim Disarmament Crowd. As Claire points out in the article of the Second Amendment Foundation, the NRA is the same- "A housewife and a cat will both chase mice out of the kitchen. But the cat wants more mice to come back."—Aaron Zelman The NRA does not want to win, because the money machine will dry up. So the NRA actually helps WRITE Victim Disarmament legislation. So I have been recommending people join NAGR, GOA, and, until now, the JPFO.

JPFO to be taken over by phony pro-gun organization? Clare Wolfe writes:

"A housewife and a cat will both chase mice out of the kitchen. But the cat wants more mice to come back."
—Aaron Zelman
Somebody reminded me this week of that statement from Aaron, the late, great founder of Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership. That was how Aaron contrasted himself and JPFO with Alan Gottlieb and Gottlieb's SAF/CCRKBA.

Golly! On Thursday, I went to the Barnet-Dulaney- Perkins Eye Center in Show Low Arizona and got that anterior capsular opacification thing looked at. "Yep," said the doctor, "That's what it is all right. I can fix it right now if you'd like."

Uh... I said I'd like. So he sat me down in front of this YAG laser—not a big device at all—and proceeded to zap my eye with it. Took about 30- seconds. Done! So I put on my glasses and found my right eye was a bit dazzeled from the bright light. That went away and after a bit, the world looked crystal clear and colorful and stuff. Golly! And it only cost $1,000—good thing we got insurance, making it cost $60 or so)! Just a little tiny bit of anterior capsular opacification in my left eye. I'll wait 'till it's worse before I have him zap that out I guess.

The brilliant Sarah Hoyt continues to hit nails right square on the head:

Our press is not in collusion because they think that the dictator will punish them (unless you mean not inviting them to parties.) But they are in collusion in order to be thought of as "beautiful people" and "good people" and smart.

Where's Neil:

To our friends who have patiently refrained from asking, Neil suffered a stroke on June 28. He is currently in an excellent acute rehabilitation program at a facility in Northern Colorado and is making good progress. I'm happy to share information. If you want updates, please let me know by email and I'll reply. Giovanni and I are working on making the house (built in 1949) accessible for Neil's eventual return.
