The Coat Hanger Lobby
by L. Neil Smith
It's hard to decide where to begin with this issue. Both sides in the matter are dead wrong, because they're both collectivistic. in their own peculiar way. The right answer is bright and clear, but difficult to convey amidst the twin blizzards of propaganda to the contrary.

A Woman on the New Ten Dollar Bill
by Pete Stephenson
We are informed that the redesign of the U.S. ten dollar bill will have a portrait of a woman in place of Alexander Hamilton. That's fine with me. I like women, and since this measure will tremendously enhance the lives of women everywhere, I'm all for it. As a man, I've already received way more than my fair share of benefits from having Alexander Hamilton's face on the bill, so I say now it's the women's turn and about time!

Quotes in a Different Context
by A.X. Perez
"Because you were neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth."—Revelation 3:16 Sometimes the Bible is a good source for good lines. Wal-Mart recently announced they would stop selling black guns due to lack of demand If you will remember, Wal-mart stopped selling "assault rifles" in an effort to be politically correct after Sandy Hook. Then as they watched mom and pop gun stores and other chains clean up selling AR's and AK's they changed their minds and quietly reintroduced AR's to their shelves. Sadly for them, the panic demand for AR's was about satisfied and sales slowed down.

Divided and Conquered
by J. Neil Schulman
Are you "Black Lives Matter" or "All Lives Matter"? Do you think a Christian baker should be fined if he doesn't provide a wedding cake for a same-sex couple—or that a county clerk's job descrption requires providing a marriage license to a same-sex couple despite her own religious beliefs?

Science Fiction: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
by Jeff Fullerton
Been a rotten summer in Greater Appalachia. Between a death in the family, turtle problems and vehicle problems—the pages of escapist literature have been looking rather appealing in recent days. Not that I'm ready to give up on life in the real world—but at times—science fiction is like comfort food for the soul in the way that it often takes me to a better time or place. Either in that future time that has transcended the problems of the here and now—or to times past when it was still fashionable to be hopeful, optimistic and visionary. But I repeat myself.

To My Readers and Friends
by L. Neil Smith
Three years ago, I published my second work of non-fiction, Down With Power (Phoenix Pick, 2012). Unlike my first, Lever Action (Mountain Media, 2004), which was a more or less random collection of essays, written at odd moments over several years, Down With Power was written to a point.

EDITORIAL MATTERS

Okay, it seems we have had a bit of trouble with our web hosting and email service. It is now back and fixed, At least we hope it is fixed!

If anyone sent us any article or comment or whatever and we seem to have ignored it, try again! (Of course, we may have just ignored it for one reason or another.)

In the attempt to overcome the control of Political Correctors in the once-meaningful Hugo Awards, we are happy to point to this announcement:

Introducing Sad Puppies Four: The Bitches are Back
by Kate Paulk

The Hugo awards has entirely too small a voting and nominating pool. Five thousand votes is the largest number ever received? Two thousand nomination ballots? That's piddly. For a field loved by millions, it's nowhere near enough, and makes it easy for any small clique to corrupt the idea of awarding great SF and start giving themselves awards.

We want at least ten thousand nomination ballots. Tens of thousands of votes (which means tens of thousands of Hugo memberships, either supporting or attending). So many votes and voters that it's almost impossible for any one group -- and yes, that includes the Sad Puppies—to dominate anything. to dominate anything.

So, SP4 is all about MOAR! More voters. More votes. More people. We want to make the Hugos bigger and more representative of fandom as a whole, to bring people in rather than give them an asterisk that looks kind of wrong (especially beside the rocket) to try to drive the "interlopers" out. SF is a big tent: we don't want to kick out anyone, even writers of bad message fiction that makes puppies sad.

So if you (yes you valued reader) are a fan of Science Fiction and/or Fantasy, and if you do not join the annual WorldCon as a supporting or even attending member (I've been to one), why not join this next time? It is only $50 to join as supporting and be eligable to nominate your favorites published in the year 2015. And then to vote on the top nominations. Go to midamericon2.org

Turn the Hugo into something meaningful and important again—join up and make your voice heard!

The Puppies Four effort is shepherded by Kate Paulk, Sarah Hoyt and Amanda Green.
