Seems Like Old Times
by L. Neil Smith
Operating my trusty laptop last week was like piloting a time machine. My tolerance for the subhumanity offered to the American public as Presidential timber had sunk to an all-time low. I couldn't imagine what candidates for lesser offices were like. I was thinking of Caligula. When he appointed his war-steed to the Roman Senate, it was said to be the first time a whole horse had occupied a Senate seat.

The Perils of State Surveillance
by Sean Gabb
I was a techno-pessimist in the mid-1990s. I thought that, in spite of many collateral advantages, the IT revolution would enable states to gather and use vast amounts of information, and that this would be used to enslave us.

Zero Aggression Principle
by Jeff Colonnesi
The problem -- the ONLY problem -- with the Zero Aggression Principle or the Non Aggression Principle is that people don't understand it. People have become inured to government initiated force and accustomed to the government telling the people when it is acceptable to use force. They confuse "zero aggression" with "zero use of force". It's not the case and never was. Both the ZAP and NAP prohibit the INITIATION of force. They don't prohibit it as a response to aggression.

The Folly of Steve Berry
by Sean Gangol
For nearly eight years I have been a fan of the author that goes by the name of Steve Berry. For those who are unfamiliar with this man's work, he usually writes thrillers that have the same mystery and intrigue as a Dan Brown novel with the fast paced action of an Indiana Jones movie. I would also say that Berry's novels also have a slight touch of 007 thrown into the mix. I have pretty much enjoyed every novel that Steve Berry has written to some extent. Though I have been somewhat disappointed by his last two books.

Do companies have more responsibility than making money for shareholders?
by Jeff Colonnesi
Reason magazine recently did an interview / article1 with Whole Foods CEO John Macke. In it he brings up some good points. One of which I think is the damage done to our branding by the hard core, old school libertarian insistence that, as Milton Friedman said: "the only responsibility of a business is to increase its shareholders' values".

EDITORIAL MATTERS

Winter is here. We had a long lingering mild fall until a week or so ago, when it turned cold. Below freezing last night. Next time I move it is going to be to somewhere warmish. All the time! Of course, places that are warmish in the winter tend to be... hot in the summer. Phoenix, for example. So it goes.

I see someone has proclaimed that people who eat meat are going to die. I hate to be the one to reveal this, but all of us are going to die of something. You can count on it. (Unless somebody comes up with a wonderful invention of course!)
