Tell It Like It Is
by L. Neil Smith
You are cordially invited to consider this a funeral oration for
the once-honorable word "liberal", which, in the past 70 years or so has come to mean
precisely nothing. In earlier centuries, it might have been used to describe
today's libertarians, politically and socially tolerant of all possible viewpoints.
Thomas Jefferson was a liberal of this sort, perhaps the ultimate liberal, and so was Thomas Paine.

Troublesom Priest
by A.X. Perez
"Who will rid me of this troublesome priest?" Mainstream Media
wants Donald Trump to go away. The Republican leadership wants him to go away. The
protesters who stopped him from speaking in Chicago sure as hell want him to go away.

How to Learn Greek and Latin
by Richard Blake
I have been invited to teach Latin to the older children at my
daughter's primary primary school. Since the Latin taught will be very basic, and
since I have already agreed what textbook I am to use, I will take the same approach
as I might if teaching French or Spanish to children. The fact of the engagement,
though, has prompted me to various thoughts on how adults can most efficiently
learn either or both of the classical languages.

A Creative‘s Call to Arms
by Don Templeton
“For instance, a certain left-wing nation which has
employed secret-police agencies for 61 years has now reached the point where the
leaders are terrified of painters and poets.” Robert Anton Wilson wrote
this statement circa 1980. He was referring to the Soviet Union. Today, in 2016,
the United States has become the new Soviet Union. In a February 21st article
published on Infowars.com, Kurt Nimmo revealed that the Justice Department is
currently busy “tweaking” the Patriot Act in order to prosecute
“anti-government extremists.” John Carlin, head of the DOJ‘s
national security division said: “Homegrown violent extremists can be
motivated by any viewpoint on the full spectrum of hate—anti-government views,
racism, bigotry, anarchy and other despicable beliefs.” Carlin can‘t
sleep at night thinking there are people who disagree with Almighty Government. Of
course, the goal of all of this is to make ANY opposition to the state an act of
terrorism. Internal documents from Homeland Security specifically characterize any
political groups or individuals who “reject federal authority in favor of
state or local authority, or [reject] government authority entirely” as domestic
terrorists. Note how the word terrorism in the government‘s lexicon has now
become merely a matter of opinions held. No longer is it necessary to actually engage
in actual violence towards a political end to be a “terrorist.”

As Pogo used to say: Friday the 13th came on Sunday
this month!
The great thing about American Politics is that no
matter how strange it is, you just know it will get
stranger. Fortunately, I've stopped paying any
attention (as much as I can anyway). Yes, it is
a farce, but it is not funny anymore. Funny I
could endure. Pathetic, though, is just too...
er... pathetic.
The Decline and Fall of Civilization, well that
is tragic, and here we are stuck in the middle
of it. And again, not amused.
I repost this every now and again, just to
remind us all:
Love of truth necessary.
He that would seriously set upon the search of truth ought
in the first place to prepare his mind with a love of it.
For he that loves it not will not take much pains to get
it; nor be much concerned when he misses it. There is
nobody in the commonwealth of learning who does not
profess himself a lover of truth: and there is not a
rational creature that would not take it amiss to be
thought otherwise of. And yet, for all this, one may truly
say, that there are very few lovers of truth, for truth's
sake, even amongst those who persuade themselves that they
are so. How a man may know whether he be so in earnest, is
worth inquiry: and I think there is one unerring mark of
it, viz. The not entertaining any proposition with greater
assurance than the proofs it is built upon will warrant.
Whoever goes beyond this measure of assent, it is plain,
receives not the truth in the love of it; loves not truth
for truth's sake, but for some other bye-end.
-- John Locke, Essay concerning Human Understanding, Book
IV, Chapter 19 ("Of Enthusiasm")
I was reading in Unintended Consequences by John Ross
and came across this sentence:
Nazis were just police in a police state.
And so it goes.
