Be Careful Who You Call "Boomer"
by L. Neil Smith
Last week, a local radio host, Michael D. Brown, a former federal
bureaucrat with whom I agree more frequently than with many other right-wing pundits,
for reasons I only learned later, launched into an hour's rant about the American
atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, some seventy-one years ago, in 1945. I had no idea
what had triggered this tirade. Unconsciously, I assumed it was an anniversary of some
kind, but that's August. "Fat Man" fell on Nagasaki on my late mother's birthday, August 9th.

Autopsy on a Lost Referendum
by Sean Gabb
Though we have nearly four weeks yet of campaigning, I find it hard to
believe that the European Referendum will end in other than a crushing defeat for the Leave
Campaign. For many on our side, this will be the end of their hopes. They have spent twenty
five years—sometimes forty—connecting everything bad in this country with membership of
the European Union, and pressing for a referendum. They now have their referendum. It will be
lost. Age alone will give many of them nowhere to go. Some will pass the rest of their lives
complaining that the vote was rigged. Most will drift away into confused silence. My own
view is that the Referendum was always a mistaken strategy, and that its loss will bring an
end to one of the less valuable chapters in the history of our movement.

Orange is the New Black, by Piper Kerman
A Book Review
by Eric Oppen
It is said that here in the United States, we have the second-highest
rate of incarceration, per capita, in the world. A lot of this is because of the endless,
mindless War on Some Drugs. Too many "conservatives," forgetting that there were no drug
laws and no drug problem before they were made illegal, wake up at night in a cold sweat,
trembling with fear because someone, somewhere, might be getting high. And too many
"liberals" forget their liberalism when confronted by the fatally seductive idea that the
dysfunctional behavior that distresses them so about their favorite kinds of people is the
fault of evil drugs, and, if the drugs could only be somehow got rid of, Utopia would result.

Nuclear Energy: How the State Stole Our Future ... Again.
by Kristophr
"Peaceful nuclear power" During WWII, the people at the Manhattan
project were evaluating different metals for use in nuclear reactions. The three candidate
metals were Uranium 235, Plutonium 239, and Uranium 233. All three could be used, but U235
was difficult to separate from the mostly inert U238 it was mixed with, and U233 required
a large mass (over 200 lbs.) to create an explosion, and the U232 it tended to decay into
made it a strong gamma ray emitter, and difficult to handle in a bomb.

Voting and Complaining
by MamaLiberty
Every election cycle, at least a few people tell me that if I don't
"vote," I can't complain about the results. This has never made any sense at all to me,
but this year it seems even more ludicrous than usual. Now, let's see if that premise holds up.
