L. Neil Smith's Covenant of Unanimous Consent actually FULFILLS the promise of individual freedom in Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of Independence. The Covenant is simple, rational, personal, easy to understand and even short enough to memorize. It easily fits on one side of a single piece of paper--and is currently available in English, Spanish, French and German!

Europe: The Age of Globalism, 1999-2016 (?)

I spoke earlier with a friend who lives in Bath. He told me how, in 1999, he sat on the Berlin Wall as it was being torn down, and how, last Thursday, he went and voted to leave the European Union. Writing history before it has happened is particularly unwise. We have not left the European Union. We have not even notified our intention to leave, and no one knows what settlement will eventually be reached, or if other member states will decide to leave as well. This being said, it may be that future historians will regard the time bounded by these two events as forming a distinct epoch, different in its tone and assumptions from what went before and what came after.

Recently there was a horrible shooting that occurred at a gay night club in Orlando where forty-nine people were killed and fifty-three wounded and it is now known as the worst mass shooting in the history of the United States. I remember first hearing about the atrocity when I woke up on Sunday for my daily ritual of listening to the news while eating my breakfast and drinking my cup of Joe. As soon as I heard that nearly fifty people had been killed, I knew that it wasn't your run of the mill shooting. It was quite obviously an act of terrorism. I also knew that there would be people who would try to milk this tragedy for whatever it was worth.

Movie Review: Independence Day II: The Resurgence

Nearing the end of a day at work last Friday I was wrangling the decision for some long overdue R&R; Contemplating the Independence Day sequel which was coming out that very night. Ended up going to see it and did the New City Buffet on the way. Was hoping to write a movie review also—if I could find the time that weekend. I didn't; on the account it being rather busy between the new Double Decker Turtle Pen project, managing the merger of two chicken flocks and a number of other things demanding my time and attention. And the delay turns out to be a good thing in the way of timing this review for the weekend of the 4th as we are about to celebrate the Real Independence Day.

Seventh Circuit Court Judge Richard Posner this week: "I see absolutely no value to a judge of spending decades, years, months, weeks, day, hours, minutes, or seconds studying the Constitution, the history of its enactment, its amendments, and its implementation. Eighteenth-century guys, however smart, could not foresee the culture, technology, etc., of the 21st century. ... Which means that the original Constitution, the Bill of Rights ... do not speak to today."

This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.
—Constitution of the United States, Article VI, Paragarph 2

Since Judge Posner has sworn a mighty oath to support and defend this constitution—for which he express contempt, so he obviously has no intention of supporting or defending it—it looks to me like he just resigned his judgeship, due to inability to follow his oath. Am I right?
