"Gun control is the idea that it's better to see a woman dead in an alley, strangled
with her own pantyhose, than to see her with a gun in her hand."—T.D. Melrose

The Fabian Choo-Choo
by L. Neil Smith
I was having a conversation with somebody on Facebook the other day, when I became aware that he didn't know about, or understand, how political progress really gets made. Yet another failure, owing to the libertarian movement's utter lack of an internal education system. He seemed to believe he was imparting "mature wisdom" when he criticized my advocacy of lofty, long-range, radical goals, in particular, my insistence that all taxation is morally unacceptable, a danger to world peace, and must therefore be abolished. He seemed to think this progress would somehow happen by itself, or in slow, microscopic increments, as long as people like me didn't spoil it.

In Defense of Police,
Anarchocapitalism is not Anarchy,
and other Random Thoughts less compelling than Dr. Sowell's

by Terence James Mason
I have watched with some trepidation the tenor of several of the essays presented here over the weeks since the Orlando nightclub terrorism and the Dallas police shooting. Of particular concern has been the series of essays suggesting that, as the visible arm of oppressive government, no concern should be expressed over the shooting of police and other law enforcement.

A Sobering Look At the 2016 Elections
by Nic Leobold
I don‘t go around trying to depress people, but get ready to be depressed. At least, get ready to be depressed if you‘re a libertarian or voluntaryist of whatever stripe, and you‘ve been expending anything other than a trifling amount of energy cheering on the latest u.S. elections fiasco.

The Error of Katana-gari
by Jim Davidson
Much is made by some writers of the fact that the Japanese government does not allow people in Japan to have guns. The advocates of victim disarmament are, of course, advocates of all manner of aggression against individuals, especially rape, crime, and tyranny. Various leaders of the "Warring States" period in Japan followed Nobunaga's approach to imposing hierarchy and enforcing the caste system. For example, Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered a katana-gari, or sword hunt, in 1588 (the year that the Spanish Armada was sailing against England). He, too, sought to solidify separations in the class structure. By denying commoners weapons while allowing them to the nobility, the samurai class, the concept of a social hierarchy was imposed.

Election Day
by Sean Gangol
Here we are, three months away from the elections and boy do I find it underwhelming. At least with the last two elections, as disappointing as they were, there was at least a Ron Paul that I could root for, when the idiots in the Republican Party went with some RHINO like John McCain or Mitt Romney. I have had people ask me about Ron Paul‘s son. The problem was that Rand Paul was far from being the principled politician that his father was, which is why he didn‘t have the same following. Also, he ran a terrible campaign. Of course that is a dead issue now.

Capitalism is ECONOMICS, not government!
by Dennis Wilson
Many people conflate forms of government with economics. This is somewhat understandable because governments DO exercise great influence over the economic activity within their control. But conflating government and economics has led to serious misunderstandings about cause and effect. This is clearly visible in the large number of attempts at blaming “Capitalism” for the evils being committed by Governments and their Crony Corporations!

The Lesser of Two Evils
by L. Neil Smith
Apparently, our friend P.J. O'Rourke is back, to the extent that he ever left, and last night I heard that he dislikes Donald Trump so intensely -- P.J. called him a "flying monkey" -- that he's going to vote for the Deathcamp Dolly, instead. I could speculate about what brought P.J. to this unspeakable lapse in judgment, but instead, I want to bring an unprecedented sense of proportion to the concept of voting for "the lesser of two evils."

EDITORIAL MATTERS

If you haven't read/voted go read What Shall I Write Next? by L. Neil Smith.

Here's is something really depressing:

“I started giving quizzes to my juniors and seniors. I gave them a ten-question American history test… just to see where they are. The vast majority of my students—I‘m talking nine out of ten, in every single class, for seven consecutive years—they have no idea that slavery existed anywhere in the world before the United States. Moses, Pharaoh, they know none of it. They’re 100% convinced that slavery is a uniquely American invention… How do you give an adequate view of history and culture to kids when that‘s what they think of their own country—that America invented slavery? That‘s all they know.”

And people talk about the failure of our education system. Yet is is doing exactly what it was designed to do.

And if you want to start some mental confusion, try saying to any of “Hitlery” supporters: “Bill Clinton always chose another woman—shouldn‘t you too?”
