Stamp Out Degreeism
by L. Neil Smith
One of the many interesting facts I learned by reading the splendid
Judge Dee murder mysteries by Robert van Gulik, is that, in classical
Tang Dynasty China, the authorities serving the Emperor didn’t
have a clue how to test candidates for various qualities they regarded
as desirable in government office-holders. But they had to test for
something, or else what’s bureaucracy for? And so the
qualifying tests that young men studied their hearts out for were on
literature and poetry. You can’t rely on a magistrate, they
believed, unless he can toss off a suitable sonnet or two.

I only have a few things to say about a variety of different

Further Thoughs on Theresa May
by Sean Gabb
I delivered my interim report on Theresa May at the weekend.
On Wednesday, I watched her main speech to the Conservative Party Conference. It
was a very accomplished speech, perhaps the most accomplished speech of its kind
since James Callaghan delivered his sermon on economic reality to the Labour Party
Conference in 1976. I also noted one quotation from Vergil (“Parcere
subiectis et debellare superbos”), and another from Horace (Carpe
diem). Mrs May is no Demosthenes or Burke, but she appears to have good taste
in speechwriters. Beyond that, I had nothing to add to what I had already said.
However, I have just seen this from the Guido Fawkes blog:.…

If you haven't read/voted go read What Shall I Write Next? by L. Neil Smith.
Our Mr. Smith has a new novel out, Blade of p”Na
You can get it right now Amazon.com:

Paperback
Putting this ish together got a late start since my computer wanted to spend an hour downloading and installing Windows 11—except it was called “Windows 10 Feature Update” for some reason. Sometimes I think Microsoft thinks its customers are a bunch of fucking idiots. (They may be on to something.)
Of course, there is a lot of that going around these days. The Democraticish party thinks Americans are a bunch of fucking idiots. The Republicish party thinks Americans are a bunch of fucking idiots. The Libertarianish party thinks Americans are a bunch of fucking idiots. In fact, it looks like everybody thinks Americans are a bunch of fucking idiots.
Even the Government in Washington thinks so, see: “Washington’s governing elites think we’re all morons, a new study says” by Alex Thompson.
What can I say. I'm an American, and while there do seem to be a lot of fucking idiots around, there are also a lot of non-idiots.
And it looks like those non-idiots are mad as hell and aren't going to take it anymore. There are rumblings of a "Big Fork" in which the Socialist/Fascist/Communist People Who Think They Own And Run The World are going to be ignored, shut-out, and left to their own company.
There is a beta going of a Twitter replacement. Twitter has been censoring, disconnecting, and suppressing people with political opinions they dislike. And in comes Gab (https://gab.ai/).
And we've all had experience of Wikipedia going only with the Marxist/Socialist/Communist/Fascist point-of-view for anything controversial. And so in comes Infogalactic (https://infogalactic.com/) which is a copy of Wikipedia that is going to be re-edited to be objective and to clearly distinguish between fact and opinion.
In fact, you can go look at the Infogalactic page on Gab: https://infogalactic.com/info/Gab_(company)
In the world of web browsers, there is Brave (https://infogalactic.com/info/Brave_(web_browser)) which is also beta, but seems to be in a condition to work okay most of the time. It is done by people obsessed with security and privacy.
I'm sure there is a Facebook replacement in the works. One thing for sure is that most people know the Socialist/Fascist/Communist assholes are at the end of their run. About time. (Although there may be a Civil War or three before they are all put in their place, which place is not running things.)
And, we were speaking about fucking idiots weren't we:
Feminist PhD Candidate: Science Is Sexist Because It’s Not Subjective
by Joy Pullmann
Women and minorities cannot understand logic or objective truths, says a graduate student in her dissertation, so science classes should stop using the scientific method.
College science classes are hostile to women and minorities because they use the scientific method, which assumes people can find reliable truths about the natural world through careful and sustained experimentation, concludes a recent dissertation by a doctoral candidate at the University of North Dakota.
Laura Parson, a student in the university’s education department, reviewed eight science class syllabi at a “Midwest public university” and said she discovered in them a hidden hostility to women and minorities....
...Even though the course syllabi contained no “gendered assumptions” about students or other overtly discriminatory implications, Parson writes, they display prejudice against women and minorities because they refuse to entertain the possibility that “scientific knowledge is subjective.”
