The Editor’s Notes
by Ken Holder, Editor
I seem to now be 70-years old. That's 3-score and 10 in old-time
calculation. Golly. No wonder I feel bad all the time. So it goes.

In Response to David Brin on Heinlein
by J. Neil Schulman and Brad Linaweaver
Brad Linaweaver and I are equally disturbed by
David Brin’s attempt to recruit the late Mr. Heinlein to the current
anti-Trump crusade. For those who aren’t well-read, Brad is the author of
Moon of Ice, endorsed by Robert A. Heinlein. He was an associate
editor on Bill Patterson’s The Heinlein Journal and is a life member of the
Heinlein Society.

Freedom of Speech: A Brief Defence
by Sean Gabb
Every age we have so far known has been one of
censorship. This is not to say that opinion has been equally
constrained in all times and places. Sometimes, as in the Soviet
Union, it has been oppressive and omnipresent—even extending to
an imposition of orthodoxy on the natural sciences. More often, it
has been focussed on perceived criticisms of the established
political and religious order. Sometimes, dissent has been permitted
among the intellectual classes—especially when expressed in a
language unknown to the people at large, and only punished when
communicated to the people at large. Sometimes, a diversity of
political orders has limited any particular censorship to an area of
just a few square hundreds of miles. Sometimes it has been limited by
a general belief in the right of free expression. But I can think of
no time or place where publication has been absolutely unconstrained.

Virtue Signaling 101
by Sean Gangol
I will admit that I am a little late to the game when it comes to
weighing in on the recent tragedy in the historic town of
Charlottesville, Virginia where a protest against the removal of a
hundred-year-old statue of Robert E. Lee was being held in the town’s
park. The protest was called “Right United” which encouraged
conservatives from all around the country to participate. It has been
reported by many media outlets that the protesters were White
Nationalists, which I didn’t really believe at first for two reasons.
One being that if a member of the mainstream media told me that the
sky was blue, I would have to look up and see for myself.…

From the Rust Belt to the Asteroid Belt: Exploring Greater Appalachia
by Jeff Fullerton
Been a lousy summer for writing on the account of
being busy with the usual stuff and trying to decide the best topic
thread to go with. There was almost a midsummer edition of the
Norseman’s Diaries but it got abandoned because some of the
parts I was attempting to send the editor were getting stuck in the
outbox and time was running out. It could be said I have more excuses
than Heinz has pickles—but I thought I might be overdoing the
Norseman’s Diaries a bit anyway. Especially in a summer season
that remains so far relatively benign as far as weather goes.
