The Editor’s Notes
by Ken Holder, Editor
Fascinating and thoughtful reading matter for your thoughtful and
fascinating reading. And even though it is in The New Yorker, the author/editor
forgot to be snarky about Trump. Really, ya can’t depend on anything these days.

Save Your Dixie Cups, Boys!
by L. Neil Smith
As I’ve said many times, over the years my
principal interest as a novelist has shifted from what I call the
Grand Idea (libertarianism and all its wonders) to the experiences
and personalities of people living the Grand Idea and how do
the people and the idea influence one another. Events of the last six
months have seen some pretty strange behavior on the part of some
Americans. Again and again the more thoughtful among us have asked
ourselves what caused the spectacular, frightening, and sometimes
funny 2016-2017 post-election “psychotic break” we witnessed among
Democrats and other anti-trump voters.

La La Land
by J. Neil Schulman
I originally watched La La Land on a
screener sent to me during awards season. I just watched ten minutes in the middle on HBO,
remembered what I hated about it, and turned it off.

Barbarians: How Baby Boomers, Immigrants, And Islam Screwed My Generations, A Review
by Sean Gangol
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the work
of Lauren Southern, she is a former reporter for a conservative news
show produced in Canada, called Rebel Media. She is renowned for
causing controversy when she went to what was referred to as a “Slut
Walk” where feminists walk around in various stages of undress to
protest “Rape Culture.” First Southern tried interviewing several of
the attendees only to get answers that proved how out of touch with
reality these third wave lunatics really were. I laughed hysterically
when one of the attendees asked Lauren what the solution was to cat
calling. Her response was “Certainly not walking around in my
underwear.” Though her most controversial deed at the Slut Walk was
to hold up a sign that said that there was no Rape Culture in the
West, which angered many members of The Libertarian Party in Canada
so much that they actually tried to expel her from the party.

Who Decided to Issue Mohamed Noor a Gun?
by Vin Suprynowicz
On Saturday night, July 15, 40-year-old Australian Justine
Ruszczyk Damond, a woman trained as a veterinarian but working as a
yoga instructor and “life coach” (American veterinary
licensing requirements may be in play), living with her fiancé in a
“nice neighborhood” in southwest Minneapolis and planning
to marry in August, heard noises in the alley behind her home. She
heard what sounded like people having sex.

The Value of the Greek and Roman Classics
by Sean Gabb
When a member of the House of Commons rises to
speak on a subject in which he has a pecuniary interest, both the
rules of the House and plain decency require him to declare that
interest. It is a just requirement, and I propose to follow it here.
My agreed title for this morning is “The Value of the Greek and
Roman Classics.” I run the Centre for Ancient Studies, which
provides tuition in Greek and Latin and Classics in general. I am also
the author of twelve novels set in the early Byzantine Empire. Give or take the
inevitable problem of converting interest into direct sales, the more
people I can inspire to a love of the Ancient World, the greater my income.

Publisher's Note
by L. Neil Smith
Just to remove any uncertainty among my readers,
I am very strongly in favor of a wall along the U.S./Mexican border.
Our neighbors to the south have abused the concept of open borders for decades.
