Don't Fence Me In

I first heard and saw karaoke performed in the 1993 Wesley
Snipes/Sean Connery movie Rising Sun (yeah, I know, I don’t get out
very much) which was part of the hysterical screaming that the Japanese were
taking over everything, cruelly forcing perfectly good money on us, in
payment for our crappy, ramshackle old assets. Soon, Japan, Inc. would own
the United States of America! I pointed out that they were on the wrong side
of a “nerd gap” in innovation between us, and I predicted they would soon go
belly-up trying to catch up with us. And that’s just what they did.

How to Beat the Red Flag Laws

The ruling class has discovered a new toy for themselves,
the so-called Red Flag laws, by which a person's firearms may be confiscated
when some other person deems that a good idea. They are so thrilled with
this new toy that the laws are quickly spreading from state to state, with
apparently no legislator having any qualms about adverse reactions from the
voters. No doubt, as with all new expansions of government power, the first
incidences of use of this law really will be against nut cases, and everyone
will breathe a sigh of relief when some guy still fighting the Korean War in
his mind, is relieved of his arms—never mind that the chance of being
victimized by such a person is essentially zero. But order is preserved and
government serves us again, yay!

Why Do Vampires Suck?

I used to be a big fan of zombie books and movies. In the
golden age of the 80’s, when they were still hard to find, and the ones that
you did manage to get your hands on were still interesting. Sure, they
almost exclusively payed homage to Romero’s Night of the Living Dead,
but they at least went about it their own way. John Skipp and Craig
Spector’s Book of the Dead comes immediately to mind. An incredible
collection, it introduced me to such diverse talents as Joe R. Lansdale,
David J. Schow, and Robert McCammon. And while it’s true that their
follow-ups to this anthology never came close to reaching the greatness of
the first, if they’d done nothing else with their careers than BotD,
their place in genre fiction would have been cemented.

I have never shied away from calling out people who I thought
were being disingenuous, whether they resided on the left or the right. I
have even been willing to call out my fellow libertarians when I felt that
they were being less than honest about a stance that they decided to take,
just as I did with Reason magazine. Though I will say that I don’t take much
joy in having to call out my fellow libertarians. In this particular case,
it absolutely pains me to have to call out somebody that I have had nothing
but admiration for, since I read his first book. Unfortunately, this man has
said many things that I feel to be disingenuous, so I can’t allow him to go
unchallenged.
