I See Dead Idiots
by Sarah A. Hoyt
There are moments—how can I deny it?—when my Roman
ancestors get up and march through my mind, sandal-shod feet echoing off
newly built roads and pointing everywhere going “Ist, ist, ist” (the
indicative pronoun for something foreign and disgusting, and incidentally
close to the Portuguese for “this” “isto”. Which tells you everything you
need to know about what the first Romans to come to the Peninsula found and thought.)

What about the Workers? A Libertarian Answer
by Sean Gabb
I was called this morning by the BBC. It wanted me to
comment on the claims that Sports direct, a chain of sports clothing shops,
mistreats its workers—keeping them on zero-hours contracts, sometimes not
paying them even the minimum wage, scaring them out of going sick, generally
treating them like dirt. Would I care to go on air to defend the right of
employers to behave in this way? I am increasingly turning down invitations
to go on radio and television, and this was an invitation I declined. I
suggested the researcher should call the Adam Smith Institute. This would
almost certainly provide a young man to rhapsodise about the wonders of the
free market. My own answer would be too complex for the average BBC
presenter to understand, and I might be cut off in mid-sentence.

A Plead to Bleed
by Harding McFadden
Nothing political this time. At least I don’t think
so. Y’never know, though, do you? What I’d like to blather about this week
is reading. And writing, I suppose. But mostly reading. See, when I was a
kid my uncle started in on the brainwashing, dropping writers like Heinlein,
Asimov, Pournelle, and their like on me. As I got older, so did the subject
matter. This is where L. Neil, Koman, Pournelle with Niven (still the
only collaborative duo that wrote above their already incredible solo
standard when working together) and a couple of others. Like so many folks
before me, I was dropped down a rabbit hole that I never have fully emerged
from. Not that I’d want to.

The Norseman's Diaries—Year of Reinvention Part II: Forward into Spring
by Jeff Fullerton
Time flies when you are having Fun. And especially fast when you are busy
with life and other things. Such was the story of this spring which slow to
get started but once it did it was soon gone while I was preoccupied with
indoor projects. Mainly the restoration of the Florida Room that has
absorbed many of my days off at the expense of other things. A terrible
price to pay in the short run in the way of missing many seasonal milestones
but potentially rewarding long term once this project and the pond and
watercourse restorations mentioned in previous installments have been
completed.
