That’s not REAL panic. That’s cosplaying panic
stimulated by the madness of the crowds.

This and That

Between the time I wrote my letter to TLE published on 8 March 2020 discussing Bloomie’s attitude towards our rights and the time it was published Bloomie dropped from the Presidential race. (My dog is nicknamed Mikey for Micromutt, his former dishonor will be referred to as Bloomie.). However, his money is still in the race supporting select candidates for Congress, both House and Senate, and state offices. Eventually some of his largesse will be extended to the Democratic Candidate for President.

Apparently the object of Bloomie’s support is Joe Biden. Mr. Bloomberg should remember that Mr. Biden has been running for the Democratic nomination for president off and on since 1988. Perhaps he should remember that for nearly thirty years he was told no thank you. If Bernie wasn’t running Biden’s would have been knocked out by any of several candidates who should spend the next eight years working lower offices and rubber chicken dinners supporting other party candidates for Congress and state offices. (It wouldn’t hurt if they properly educated themselves on violence and firearms issues so they can justify rejecting their party’s current stance on gun control.)

Covid-19 is currently the main issue on the news. The President has declared a state of emergency, as have several governors and mayors. Runs on stores for hand sanitizers, cleaning supplies, toilet paper and bottled water have caught attention. I even saw a run in one store on beans and rice. Several school districts are extending spring break. I am concerned about possible issues of rationing and government controlling movement. I am somewhat encouraged by the possibility of school closures leading to more home or at least home-based learning.

Concerns about exposure in crowds have led me to reschedule my Saturday target practice to Monday. I will not quit practice as I have too much work to do to make up for lack of regular practice when I was younger. Besides, shooting is fun. However, one should use part of one’s shooting session to work on problems. I still have a bit of a slice and I need to work on my weak hand shooting. Last week I noticed I was getting sloppy controlling recoil with my .40 Liberty so I did my midweek practice with .40 Liberty instead of 9 mm Parabellum. Did much better job controlling recoil, see if it sticks next session.

Tip, regular practice shooting is necessary. Perhaps the same is true of other habits needed to live as a free person.

Consequences of National Emergency

The gun shop today reported a run on 9 mm weapons and ammo. They were sold out of standard Glock 17 and 19, Smith, and most other full size standard 9mm pistols. They were also out of shotguns except for two fairly expensive collector items on consignment and a .410 pistol grip pump that sold while I was at the store (and they only had 35 shells available for it).

When I checked after getting home, their online store was down to 10 offerings of 9 mm ammo (vs. the usual hundreds). Other calibers don’t appear to be quite so picked over yet, though I’ve been noticing a high interest in 9 mm sales since the rally against the proposed Virginia gun laws back on MLK Day.

The run at the shop started immediately after the President’s declaration of national emergency yesterday. The clerk told me that by 3 pm they had already done as much business as at their Glock event two weeks ago. Clerk also reported that Cabella’s had sold out of 9 mm ammo.

I just checked Cheaper than Dirt—they still have a number of offerings but the major brands are almost sold out. Only one offering from Federal in 9 mm, for example.

The Coronavirus Craziness

They’re cleaning out the shelves at Walmarts and other supermarkets in my local area and all over the nation. This was the toilet paper and cleaning supplies section at my local Walmart when I went shopping Saturday morning. I just don’t get it—what is it about toilet paper that makes it so compelling to hoard? However they were also working on the soup and canned goods isle and later at work I heard the panic stricken crowds have cleaned out all the meat. And the Walmart is going to start closing at 11 PM tomorrow until further notice. To get a leg up on restocking to keep up with the increased demand.

ER was unusually slow this evening compared to what it was like some of the days I’ve worked earlier this week and staff who worked yesterday said it was fairly hellacious then. I guess most people were too busy sacking Walmart to be bothered with coming in to have a chronic migraine or ingrown toenail addressed. Or else they are afraid or sensibly cautious about exposing themselves to the virus. A lot of doctors and nursing staff think it’s being overblown. The Globe thinks it’s the end of the world:

This it maybe a little over the top though you should be careful. Especially if you are elderly or have chronic health conditions like diabetes. I got a call from the care facility where my Uncle is staying telling me they are on lockdown. No visitors until further notice to protect the residents. Schools are closing for ten days and people are canceling travel plans. This is probably going to have serious economic repercussions globally and nationally. Also Deep State/Crisis Industry potential.

I finally got a new phone on Friday and have a pending article in the works. Would have had it out today but while editing it on my dinner break I decided it needed more work and most likely something more interesting will happen in the meantime.

Stay safe, stay healthy, stay Free!
