Updates and a response

Ken,

In response to today’s The Libertarian Enterprise at https://ncc-1776.org/ and the Covid-19/Coronavirus/China Flu discussions therein (including that rapscallion TJ Mason’s)

As of mid-day Sunday 3/22, immediately after publication of TLE, the US caseload of COVID-19 has increased by 14,500 diagnoses, lead by a more than doubling of the number of cases in New York. Exponential growth is … what we all say about Mother Nature, which seems appropriate in context.

Senator Rand Paul is COVID-19 positive.

And a response to your editorial page link to an article with the heading Revealed: Basic Math Error Likely Cause of Global Coronavirus Panic!

First, before discussing whether a math error is involved, let’s look in the basic science error in the article. The analysis based on comparing tested flu cases to tested coronavirus cases is valid only if the testing has been conducted with clinically identical protocols. Assuming the numbers are correct (if they’re not, the argument is invalidated on that basis), the influenza tests are based on a subset of persons presenting respiratory symptoms; the others are diagnosed as influenza based on symptoms. If that subset is biased in any way towards increased severity—say, hospital admissions—it will select from a group of patients with higher expected mortality. As is well known, COVID-19 testing is presently based almost exclusively on sampling of persons, some symptomatic and some not, who have known risk factors for COVID-19 exposure—contact with a person who as tested positive or known travel to a hot zone , and nobody (at least in the US) without positive testing is diagnosed with COVID-19; other persons are granted a similar diagnosis, such as "influenza." The sampling is not identical; therefore the comparison based on testing is scientifically invalid as presented.

Second, the number of deaths associated with influenza either includes patients who were diagnosed symptomatically without testing, or tested based on severity or even post mortality. Either of those selection criteria will increase the apparent mortality of influenza relative to other methods of selection. In any event, dividing the number of influenza fatalities by the number of tested cases without verifying that all influenza fatalities were tested is a misapplication of statistics.

Third, the estimated flu incidence is not "guesswork." It is a statistical analysis that considers diagnoses based on symptoms, diagnoses based on tests, and the selection methods under which certain populations were samples and those tests were conducted. The estimate is a statistical project, not guesswork. Certainly one can lie with statistics, but another cannot ignore them if performed properly and openly. (And let’s not get into the comorbidity of patients with both influenza and COVID-19 infection, whether concurrent or sequential. I have heard verbally but have seen no statistics that some mortalities originally specified as influenza in this season’s serious flu have been retested for COVID-19 and reclassified as COVID-19 mortalities; if true, I don’t believe those are reflected in either set of statistics.)

Last, but not least, the article cites a study with the claim that 6 of 7 COVID-19 infections were asymptomatic. A review of the study at the link shows that the study actually the 6 of 7 COVID-19 infections as "undocumented"—meaning not diagnosed as COVID-19. In any event, the analysis in the article attempts to use these undiagnosed cases to dilute the incidence and mortality of COVID-19, while at the same time arguing that the (approximately) equivalent untested influenza cases be excluded from analysis. I don’t remember what logical fallacy that it, but it is a logical fallacy.

Bottom line, and looking at the data in Mr. Mason’s article, I don’t see any reason to assert that the COVID-19 fatality rate is less than the values quoted by the World Health Organization; or, that all things being equal, that COVID-19 is not at least 10 times as lethal as influenza as claimed by the WHO and US government epidemic experts.

Respectfully,

Jim Woosley

Correction—the New York caseload has been adjusted downward by about 7,000 cases. I feel better.

Time For A Joke

Suddenly, a cow runs out onto the road, and a limo driving late at night, hits it head on, and the car comes to a stop.

The woman in the back seat, in her usual abrasive manner, says to the Chauffeur, “You get out and check on that poor cow. You were driving.”

So the chauffeur gets out, checks, and reports that the animal is dead, but it appeared to be very old. Well, says the woman, “You were driving, so you go and tell the farmer in that lighted farmhouse over there.”

Two hours later the chauffeur returns totally inebriated, a full belly, his hair ruffled, and a big grin on his face.

“My God, what happened to you?” asks the nasty woman.

The chauffeur replies, “When I got there, the farmer opened his best bottle of single malt scotch, the wife gave me a meal fit for a king, and the daughter made love to me.”

“What on earth did you say?” asks the woman.

Well, I just knocked on the door, and when it opened, I said to them, “I’m Nancy Pelosi’s chauffeur, and I’ve just killed the old cow.”

Florida room update

Pretty awesome in there.

Was pushing 80 degrees when I entered after wiping down the kitchen floor and doing a few other odd jobs around the house! Lights normally go off at 8P but I had the timers on bypass to extend my stay a little.

Looks inviting through the window.

As I look at what I accomplished since a year ago when I was just starting to put the basic infrastructure back together if feels ironic that what I thought was going to be a spectacular season may be ruined by the ongoing crisis. Yet I managed to pull it off-the restoration of the FR and it’s the way better than what it was back in the day. If I have to shut it down and go into. Survival mode I’ll find a way to restore it again in the future. I have the basic blueprint and will continue publishing about it as long as I can.

Dwarf African Violet is doing well and one of the leaves that accidentally broke off is now rooting in a propagation container and soon I ’ll have another one.

Peace Lily is about to bloom.

Planted the Panama Ficus in the planters incorporated into the cladding. Started these from cuttings off the mother plant in the big vivarium. It’s good to be able to produce my own plants in times like these. The objective is to get these to vine down and cover the cladding and the reason they are planted like this is so they get watered from below every time I run the irrigation pump to flood the trays. I used some leftover weed barrier to line the little basket trays they are in.

Have the “Squares” and the areolata in the heated Precision Cage which I was referring to previously as a “Vision Cage”. It’s a stopgap solution until I can solve the issues of keeping the room warmer in the colder months.

Another Letter from Jeff Fullerton

Dear Editor,

I hope this one finds you and Neil and all the other contributors and readership well. Was hoping to put my next edition of the Norseman’s Diaries together this week but it has been a busy one between working and making sure my home front is secure and getting my animals ready so they can fend for themselves a while should end up sick and too debilitated to care for them—or get mandated to work long stretches.

I’m writing this on a Saturday evening on dinner break. So far things are going well. I have been working in the “Hot Zone” of the ER and thankfully we have not been crushed yet with a wave of Coronavirus cases like hospitals in other parts of the country. I’m hoping we luck out on that by virtue of having more time to get ready before it hits the rural towns of the region full force.

Because of issues in regard to hospital policy and dealing with the media I’m going to focus mainly on my home front and the struggles and joys there with more emphasis on the later. I’m calling it The Pursuit of Happiness at the Crack of Doom. Even in bad times that must go on.

Hope to have a good story ready by next weekend. Everyone take care.
