President of The Future
by L. Neil Smith
Thanks, I guess, to books I’ve written like The
Probability Broach and The Gallatin Divergence (both still in
print, gift-givers), some readers have accused me of being an historian. I
am not guilty of the charge, I rush to assure you. There is not a single
academic cell in my body. I am, however, an avid student of the lessons
that history has to teach us….

Burning Down the Social Networks—by Crossoverchaos
and
The Paths Ahead—Pie In The Sky
by Sarah A. Hoyt
If you’re feeling the tension singing in the air and
over the Internet, and wondering “why are people cracking now, instead of
last week, or the week before that?” I suspect the reason has to do with
how the brain works. Or doesn’t. There’s some really neat stuff on how
outside environments affect the brain for depression in this book….

Another Große Lüge
by Carl “Bear” Bussjaeger
Gun owners should be used to it. Some high profile
shooting—preferably in a school—gets people worked up. They panic, and
decide we’re all going to die if something isn’t done about guns.
Sociopathic congresscritters—but I repeat myself—file massive victim
disarmament bills. We fight them, wasting resources we should have spent on ammunition.

The Coronavirus Panic:
Pure Waste or Midwife of Progress?
by Sean Gabb
I remain sceptical about the dangers of the Coronavirus.
Of course, it is an unpleasant illness, and no one should go out of his
way to catch it. At the same time, we are into the fifth month of the
panic, and the predicted mountain of corpses has still not appeared.
Whether in countries that have imposed a lockdown, or those that have not,
rates of infection and of death seem to be reaching the peak of their
distribution curves. It may be that the final impact on the health of
mankind will be no worse, or not much worse, than that of a severe
seasonal flu. Even if, minus the lockdown, the potential impact might have
been three or four or five times greater, it may still be worth asking if,
on any reasonable calculus of cost and benefit, the resulting slump was
worth the small saving of lives.

Laura Austen Was Raped
by Trevor David Hitchin
Here are the details of a most horrific tragedy which
occurred on the night of December 25, 2011 involving myself, my then
girlfriend/fiancee Laura Jane Austen and a group of six Boise Police
Department officers. Three of those officers were Adam Crist, Adam
Nielsen, and Kevin Witmuss. Although I've previously been provided the
dispatch logs, I have chosen not to identify the other three in this document.

The Norseman’s Diaries: Pursuing Happiness at the Crack of Doom
by Jeff Fullerton
So much for the Milestone Year. That was what it was
supposed to be starting out with the supplemental edition several months
ago when I was getting my firewood and tweaked the Florida Room and
mocking the Green New Deal with my own version of the Sea Quest
Cheeseburger that was born of recollection of an iconic and prophetic
episode of that hit TV series of the 1990s. A time that could easily say: miss me now?

How Tall Is Water?
by Michael Badnarik
Nothing makes me more calm and content than sailing a
boat on the ocean. Knowing that my actions are directly responsible for my
survival gives me a sense of connecting with the earth that supersedes any
of my other hobbies. I have often said, I love the ocean like a mistress.
Most of the time, I prefer being the Captain. I don’t trust anyone to pay
attention to the details as rigorously as I do. There have only been one
or two exceptions to this rule.

First Do No Harm
by Jim Davidson
In the 19th Century the Malthusians determined to limit
access to health services. John D. Rockefeller was one of the chief among
these people with distorted and ugly views of economics, mankind's nature,
and the ways in which innovation overcomes all manner of difficulties. He
helped to organise the American pharmaceutical industry and to promote the
cartel operating in restraint of trade called the American Medical
Association. He and his cohort of wealthy and deeply misguided (and in
many cases, thoroughly evil) associates worked very diligently to hurt as
many people as possible.

Herding Wildcats
by L. Neil Smith
A good friend of mine* recently sent me an interesting
article from the Internet about a new rifle cartridge being offered by SIG
(Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft). I believe they want it considered
as a possible new combat item, intended to replace .223 Remington
(5.56×45mm, which, for many reasons, is a terrible cartridge and needs
relacing) but, offly enough, its first outing is in a new old-fashioned
bolt-action rifle, the kind best limited to hunting. I suspect that’s
because no combat-worthy rifle can handle it.

Leaving Savannah
by Jim Davidson
John Kell was very excited about boarding the Hydro
Lance. "See back there, those are the most advanced
engines for this type," he said to Sal Mayweather. "When
McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing they renamed this planes in this
series the Boeing 717. Same high tail, same rear fuselage mounted engine
pylons."
