“Gun control is the idea that it’s better to see a woman dead in an alley, strangled
with her own pantyhose, than to see her with a gun in her hand.”—T.D. Melrose

I’m Mad As Hell…
by L. Neil Smith
Babylon Five was a science fiction television series that premiered in 1996 and ran for five years. Featuring its own rich, full backstory, complex characters, and dramatic political situations, it became a welcome alternative to the military-socialist wet-dream Star Trek and the mysticism-laden and mythology-based Star Wars. With only occasional exceptions, I enjoyed it very much and still think about it a lot today.

The Ape Who Loves
by Sarah A. Hoyt
When I was fourteen I read Desmond Morris’ The Killer Ape [I’m reliably informed Morris wrote The Naked Ape, which if I remember also went on about how violent we were, though maybe not uniquely so. There was however a “The Killer Ape.” I just don’t remember the name of the authors. It’s been 44 years, okay?] and because I was fourteen and virgin of any real history, anthropology and/or psychology, particularly animal psychology (to be fair, so are college graduates in those fields. In fact, college has become a way to cultivate and preserve ignorance and misconceptions, sort of a bell jar over the mind that lets no contrary facts in.) I thought it made a good point.

Tyranny of the Experts: Revisited
by Sean Gangol
When I wrote the previous article “Tyranny of the Experts” it was a year or two before the Corona pandemic hit. It was one of the articles that kept being placed on the backburner when more pressing subjects came up. Though once the pandemic did hit, the subject of my article actually became even more relevant.

The Sage of Baltimore, Revisited
by Eric Oppen
Lately, I’ve been on a H.L. Mencken kick. I discovered him in junior high, thanks to my mother. She had been an English teacher for years, specializing in literature, and Mencken was just one of many authors she brought to my attention. I devoured The Vintage Mencken, which was all that I could lay hands on at that time, and later on got hold of the Chrestomathy. But for years, that was about all the Mencken I could get. Living in a small town, pre-Internet, with little discretionary income, was not always easy.

Adventures in Herpetology: A Breakthrough & Other Projects
by Jeff Fullerton
For some time I’ve been promising to begin this series which was intended to be a successor to the one began in the early spring of 2014 as “Nihon Ishigame: an Outlaw Turtle Enthusiast Goes Japanese.”
