Define Need

Used stimulus money to replace old home computers last summer. I tell this story now to point out fallacy in “To each according to his needs.”

Imagine having to answer the following to get two laptops (actually, one laptop, one Chromebook).

• Why do you need two computers?
• Why do you need Microsoft Office on one?
• Why won't 2 Chromebooks do?
• How do you plan to use the computers?
• Why should we let you own the tools to post on Facebook or other venues?
• Will you use the computers to earn money?
• If you use your computers for work is it a socially responsible job?
• Why should we let you own two computers instead of just one? (no lip about this being redundant with question one.)

I want to live in a world where I don't have to answer this kind of questions about the things I buy. Right now, I live in a world where I don't have to answer questions.

Let's see if it's still that way this time next year.
