Khruschev Was Right
by L. Neil Smith
Many individuals reading this may be too young
to remember Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev. He was once the
bloody-handed dictator of the former Soviet Union, back when Elvis
was the King of Rock’n’Roll. He was ably portrayed by Bob “Eddie
Valiant” Hoskins in 2001’s Enemy at the Gates, about the
Battle of Stalingrad. If you look him up in communist Wikipedia, they
will try to persuade you that he was a saint, slightly to the right
of Mother Theresa. (Just now Wikipedia has its hand out, begging for
contributions. I metaphorically spit in that hand, and would do it in
person if I could.)

Technique of the Coup D’Etat
by Sarah A. Hoyt
There is a technique to the coup d’etat,
particularly one that is known not to be wanted by the people of the
country upon which you performed it. As in the French revolution it
always involves terror. I’m very afraid the enemy—what do you call
people who encourage you to chant “Death to America” but think the
American flag is a symbol of “white supremacy”?—is set to unleash
terror this weekend.

“Accelerationism” and the Ruling Class
by Paul Bonneau
Not long ago, the political meaning of acceleration
or “accelerationism” meant something not much more complex than
right-wingers voting for Hillary rather than Trump. (Of course,
left-wingers voting for Hillary, had nothing to do with
accelerationism.) I’d like to use it in a broader sense, but first I
have to delve into the ruling class model. What recipe for domination
and control do all or nearly all ruling classes follow?

Fahrenheit 451: A Review (Contains Spoilers)
by Sean Gangol
I remember reading Fahrenheit 451 by Ray
Bradbury during my junior year in high school. It was one of the few
books that I enjoyed on my required reading list in English. I also
wrote a report, which included an analysis of the book, as well as
how censorship impacts society. For those of you who are unfamiliar
with the book, it centers around Guy Montag, who is part of a fire
department that no longer puts out fires, but is instead tasked with
burning books. Montag never even pays a second thought to whether he
is in the right profession, until he comes across a free-thinking
teenager and an old woman who decided that it was better to burn with
her books than to watch as they are being taken away. It is then that
he commits the unforgiveable sin of reading, which makes him a
fugitive from the law. As you probably guessed by now, this book has
an anti-censorship and anti-authoritarian theme to it, which is one
of the reasons why I still find this book appealing twenty-three
years later.

Escapist Literature: A Few more good Heinleins
by Jeff Fullerton
It’s been a pretty manic week in human affairs.
Namely the continuing fallout from the Capital Riots from the
previous week and the continuing onslaught of the Covid 19 Pandemic
that is surging again. So much for the hope that 2021 might be better
than 2020. The way things are going I’m sorely tempted to shut off
the sewer pipe of the newsfeed coming onto my phone least I drown in
the misery and despair that surrounds me. And escape.
