A BLAST FROM THE PAST Years ago I observed that if liberals really want to see fewer firearms manufactured and sold every year in this country, all they have to do is shut up. They can’t do anything about the 750,000,000—three quarters of a billion according to the industry, three times BATF estimates—already in circulation. But whenever one of these cretins thinks up a new way to harass those whose only crime is exercising the natural, fundamental, and inalienable human, individual, civil, and Constitutional right of every man, woman, and responsible child—to obtain, own, and carry, openly or concealed, any weapon any time, anywhere, without asking anyone’s permission—every time the media start yapping it up, folks go out and buy as many new guns as they can afford.

Brian Hugh Micklethwait was born on the 26th September 1947, the youngest son of Sir Robert Micklethwait, a lawyer of some distinction who rose eventually to the post of Chief National Insurance Commissioner. His mother, Philippa, née Bosanquet, came from a legal family, and was related to the Bosanquets who were important in the Liberal Party at the end of the nineteenth century. Brian attended Marlborough public school in the early 1960s as a boarder, and went up to Cambridge in 1965 to study Architecture. After this, he studied Sociology at Essex University.

Starship Troopers Revisited

Recently, I saw a video on YouTube, Starship Troopers Part I: Heinlein [Brows Held High}, which discussed Robert Heinlein and his creation of the novel, Starship Troopers . It discussed how the movie adaptation, directed by Paul Verhoeven was almost a complete bastardization of the original novel. They said that the philosophy that made the original novel great was almost absent in the movie. At one point the video did a parody of a scene in the movie where the Michael Ironside character finds a general with his brain sucked out. In the YouTube video they show Ironside with a copy of Heinlein’s classic novel before exclaiming, “They sucked out his brains!”

L. Neil and Me

I first found out about L. Neil Smith in the mid-1980s.  I had picked up one of his books, The Gallatin Divergence, up at my local Waldenbooks, more or less at random.  When one of my friends (now, alas, sadly deceased) saw what I was reading, he told me that the book was part of a series, and that it’d make more sense if I read the whole series from the beginning.  He loaned me all the North American Confederacy books in order, handing me the next one on the list when I was done with the last one.

Several weeks ago I almost wrote an editorial on my disappointment with William Shatner—AKA Captain James Tiberius Kirk of Star Trek fame over an article I stumbled across in which it was sadly revealed that he’d given up on the hope of the Star Trek future and fallen into a dystopian pit of despair over the issue of climate change. What a monumental failure of a man who was once the iconic champion of that positive vision of a future where humanity uses technological innovation to create a post scarcity society in which poverty, injustice and war (at least as far as life on Planet Earth is concerned) have been vanquished and we go on to seek out peaceful contact with new life and new civilizations and boldly go where no man has gone before.
