Big Bother Is Watching You—Again
by L. Neil Smith
A BLAST FROM THE PAST It doesn’t seem all
that very long ago that I wrote a column ("Stop the Nagging", The
Libertarian Enterprise, Issue 12, reprinted in Issue 1,138 January 9,
2022) arguing that those, like the Ad Council (whoever the hell they are),
the American Cancer Society, the American Heart and Lung Association,
et alia, who apparently have no lives of their own and feel compelled
to live our lives for us, should be shut up for good.

America Far Away
by Sarah A. Hoyt
Most of the rest of the world, but particularly
Europe, seem to have a bizarre funhouse vision of America. Part of it I’ll
admit is our fault, or at least “our fault” in the sense that every place
in the world has idiots and crazy people, but some we’re the only country
on Earth who make those people celebrities and stars. And also that no
other country’s movie industry specializes in showing the worst possible
about their own country, including making up stuff.

Missing
by Cathy L.Z. Smith
Missing you, L Neil Smith. You would have known
exactly which aspect of the maelstrom to attack. I wish you were here to
see the heroic Canadians, and the heroes of the rest of world, waking up,
asserting their self-sovereignty. You would have known what to say to
celebrate and bolster their resolve. All I can do is recognize them for
what they are facing and for their courage and their restraint in the face
of all that the utterly useless self-styled elites can throw in their way.

Thoughts on the Diamond Jubilee:
Sixty Years a Rubber Stamp
by Sean Gabb
Those of us who pay attention to such things will
have noticed a difference between the BBC coverage of the Golden Jubilee
in 2002 and of the present Diamond Jubilee. Ten years ago, the coverage
was adequate, though reluctant and even a little stiff. This time, it has
been gushing and completely uncritical. There are various possible reasons
for my observation. The first is that I was mistaken then and am mistaken
now. I do not think this is the case, but feel obliged to mention it. The
second is that Golden Jubilees are rare events, and Diamond Jubilees very
rare events, and that extreme rarity justifies a setting aside of
republican scruples. The third is that the BBC was taken by surprise in
2002 by the scale of public enthusiasm, and does not wish to be caught out
again. The fourth is that, while not particularly conservative on main
issues, we do now have a Conservative Government, and this is headed by a
cousin of Her Majesty. There may be many other reasons.

The Wyoming Chronicles, by W. Michael Gear
Reviewed by Charles Curley
There is a sub-genre of disaster novels called The
End of the World As We Know It (TEOTWAWKI). Probably my all-time favorite
here is Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle’s plea for nuclear energy and
space exploration, Lucifer’s Hammer (1997). All of them tout,
openly or covertly, the Boy Scouts’ motto, Be Prepared. Those who survive
The End of the World and prosper are those who are prepared for it. The
cliche here is the macho sharp shooting hunter who has his rifle and .45,
and thousands of rounds in his basement. But there are other ways of
preparing: see Dr. Dan Forrester in Lucifer’s Hammer.

Gloria Álvarez: A Ray of Hope from Guatemala
by Jeff Fullerton
A few weeks ago despairing in the depths of the
Coldpocalypse my furnace struggled and could not keep up with the setting
of 68 degrees on my living room thermostat. So depressed and miserable I
was lingering under the covers all morning listening to Tube. Discovered
Gloria Álvarez who is like a beacon of light from Guatemala Where they
actually have a libertarian university.
