Does "Synthetic" Really Equal "Evil"? Neil— Caught your letter to TLE— If this clown really hated plastics as much as he claims to, he'd go out of his way to eliminate plastics from his life. I'm thinking that would include the plastic keyboard that he used to type the article in question, the plastics in his car, SCUBA gear, camera, and anywhere else. This ties into the whole "synthetic = evil" meme (idiocy, really) that's been worming its way through the Euro-American culture in recent years. When will its proponents cut the synthetic rubber tires from their cars, and drive around on bare rims? When will they strip the synthetic insulation from the wires in their homes? Mike Blessing

Re: "Letter from Simon Jester" The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives is charged with enforcing the federal taxes on the products in its name. Besides raising the legal tax free amount of tobacco the law permits as Simon Jester suggests perhaps those of us with the necessary skills and talents should begin producing our own fermented and distilled beverages, within the legal tax free limits, of course. That way until the unjust tobacco and booze taxes are repealed we can tie up so much of their effort "helping" us stay within legal limits that they don't have the time to waste enforcing unjust gun laws. Imagine how many agents we could keep out of gun shops by having them tied up checking the amount of tobacco and alcohol being produced by several million home producers. Especially if said producers kept calling on them to make sure they were not producing too much stuff and/or that their products were being made safely. especially if we bug them for "tech support." It's all Luther Jones fault. Back in 1985 Mr. Jones was County Attorney for El Paso, Texas. He used his authority to interpret Texas statutes to rule that balisongs (AKA butterfly knives) were illegal switchblades under Texas law. Go ahead and guess what I had in my pocket when this announcement was made? At the time I had determined that a Weehawk style balisong from Pacific Cutlery was the perfect blade to meet my carry needs. It was the right length, the edge appeared easy to maintain, it was rugged, the samples I'd handled felt right in my hand, it was cool, and the handle was just the right size to tamp down tobacco in a pipe. The search for an acceptable carry knife has led to me developing a collection of blades that approaches being a neurotic symptom. One of these days my cash balance and the availability of weehawk balisongs will coincide and I'll be able to score one as a collectors' item. Until then and the day the law is corrected I continue the search for an acceptable substitute. This makes me a monster in the eyes of those hoplophobes whose symptoms include acrimophobia. This is something tyrants do so well. They make people into monsters. Sometimes this is done by demonizing people with values different from there own, the hoplophobes' fear and hatred of people who exercise the right to own, carry, and collect weapons for example. Other times they push people into monstrosity, the fact is by outlawing certain relatively harmless activities, government forces the people engaged on them to commit crimes to avoid detection and traps them having to live among true criminals, those who seek to prey on others. Finally, they will warp people into active resistance, making people feel they are trapped between submission to tyranny and becoming terrorists and tyrants themselves. Tyrants create monsters. Then they excuse their tyranny on the grounds that society must be protected from the monster they create. Maybe it's time to leave the monster in peace and put the breeder out of business instead.
