The unabridged audio version of my 1983 novel The Nagasaki Vector, brilliantly read by the great libertarian radio host Brian Wilson, is finally available for purchase.

Many feel that this is the funniest book I've written so far—at least intentionally—and features our old friend Win Bear, G. Howell Nahuatl, a sapient coyote, time traveler Bernie Gruenblum, and Georgie, the time machine who loves him.

THE CURRENT ISSUE

EDITORIAL MATTERS:

We have another review of Down With Power at [this link] I was going to ask for permission to reprint it in this issue but forgot until just now. Ah well, go read it.

A couple of weeks ago my litle netbook got its Windows XP so screwed-up it wouldn't boot, and the PF11 key with is supposed to allow a reinstall wasn't there and didn't work and I was left with a paperweight of awkward size and shape. So I loaded up some kind of Linuxs on a USB stick and installed that. Linux Mint it finally was.

I'll tell you, after all I've heard about Linux being fast and not having MS Windows-type problems, this sure is one slow system. XP must have run at least twice as fast, if not three times. And Linux Mint is frequently going off and just hanging up for minutes at a time. Sometimes hours at a time—I have to power it down to get free. I put in XFCE which is usually lots faster, but that kept hanging and wouldn't remember settings (I had to re-jigger the network settings every time I woke it up). And sometimes it didn't seem to know it was running on a netbook with a short screen and it would put the "OK" button down below the bottom of the screen where I couldn't click.

I also tried Mepis Linux, three flavors of Ubuntu, and Mandriva. Not much difference, although maybe Mandriva was faster? It used RPM, and my experience with RPM made me not want to do that ever again. And the Ubuntus network set-ups never took, which was astonishing, it supposed to be ultra simple and useable and all. Sheesh.

Oh, I did try to put an XP install on a USB stick, but I guess Ol' Bill doesn't want that done, 'cause I sure didn't find a way to do it. Screw you, Bill, I'd rather have XP back if you'd just let me! Mumble, grumble.

Chewing the Fat
by L. Neil Smith
I received an indignant e-mail message yesterday from a group whose mailing list I stay on because their utter stupidity, insanity, and corruption—expressed in a nearly infinite variety of manners—provides me with an endless supply of ideas for articles like this one. It's the same reason I used to listen to Rush Limbaugh.

Life in FRONA
by Russell D. Longcore
In many articles that I have written about secession, I have referred to a state that secedes and becomes a new nation. Many times I've called it New Texas for want of a better name. But from this moment forward, when I talk about the perfect example of secession, the new nation will have a new name... The Free Republic of North America. Its acronym will be FRONA.

To Hell with Big Bird!
by Eric Oppen
Once again, the usual suspects are squealing like hogs on butchering day at the thought of, the gods forbid, PBS losing its federal funding. And, once again, they're putting it all in terms of losing Sesame Street. "The evil pinchpennies want to kill Big Bird!" they howl. Unfortunately, the evil pinchpennies have some pretty good arguments on their side.

Be Optimistic
by Kent McManigal
Last week Mike Pomper asked how optimistic he should be, so I'll tell him: Very. Here's why. The US government is NOT America. America will survive- and probably thrive- after the US government completes its suicide. Don't bother trying to stop them. They wouldn't listen anyway. Just don't let them take you down with them.

Bravely Bombing the Boche:
The Morality of Killing Civilians

by Sean Gabb
I have just read a story in The Daily Mail about Bomber Command—that is, the RAF unit responsible for levelling much of Germany in the second world war. Apparently, the surviving veterans aren't able to pay for the monument they put up this year to commemorate their efforts. The members of the relevant committee may be personally liable to cover these costs. It that doesn't get us shouting for taxpayer funding, the newspaper article tells us that "[t]he bravery of Bomber Command can be summed up by a single, miserable statistic: almost half did not survive the war. No other unit could claim such a deplorable life expectancy. They'd have been safer sitting at home playing Russian roulette with a loaded pistol." Well, I'm sick of this endless war porn.
