I got a message yesterday from an individual named Charles McGlawn, whom I wish to thank for taking the time and effort to write to me. I suspect that your letter, Chuck, is in response to my most recent article in L. Neil Smith's The Libertarian Enterprise, in which I questioned the candidacy of ex-Governors Gary Johnson and William Weld. However, a couple of the things you say lead me to believe that you have me confused with somebody else, perhaps libertarian science fiction author and movie-maker J. Neil Schulman. For example, I have never seriously asked "What Would Gary Johnson Do?" about anything. I know all too well what a statist—or, if you insist, a mini-statist—like him would do when it comes to rights of individuals subject to his rule.

Gun Rights—A Not So Modest Proposal

Our political "leaders" are always railing against all the "gun violence" in our society. But in America the only places with a lot of gun violence are Chicago, Detroit, New York and California, the exact only places where those same politicians have managed to make the Right to Keep and Bear Arms "illegal" (it's only illegal in their warped power-drunk minds. No Right to be Armed?

The Ninth Circuit Court has ruled that there is no right for citizens to carry concealed firearms in public in a state that all but forbids the open carry of firearms. In effect there is no right to bear arms in California. There is a privilege of bearing arms if the local gendarmerie decide you have a great enough need. The Ninth Circuit Court has ruled that self defense is not a right guaranteed by the Second Amendment and therefor not necessarily a good enough reason to extend someone the privilege of legally carrying a concealed handgun.

A Word From the Publisher

I'm a bit late with this sad news and I hope you'll forgive me; I just got it, myself. The Libertarian Party's first Vice Presidential candidate—also the first woman in American history, as well as the first Jew to receive an electoral vote—Theodora Nathalia "Tonie" Nathan, died of Alzheimer's disease, a particularly cruel fate, I think, for a libertarian, on March 20th.

I knew Tonie pretty well, back in the "old days", and enjoyed her company at conventions and other Party gatherings, although as you might expect, we sometimes disagreed on details. I can't remember any of them now. Her energy and enthusiasm lent a kind of sparkle to libertarian doings which I, for one, have sorely missed more recently.

Tonie was a media person, having education and experience with both newspapers and television. To any extent that the Pacific Northwest, where she lived, knows anything about the freedom philosophy, I'm certain Tonie is largely responsible.

Farewell, Tonie, you'll be missed.

"Live Free or Die" as they say in some State or other. "Leave Me Alone!" as we all say, and no longer under our breath. Shout it out! Vote from the Rooftops! Enough of this crap!

Or not. It's all up to you, you rugged individualist you! Be a slave, I don't care. But go read our Feature Article this week: "The Real Libertarian Platform—Abolition" by L. Neil Smith. An mark today on your calendar—the day we started calling a spade a goddamn shovel.

As he says:

Libertarianism is based on two, and only two, very simple ideas.

The first is absolute ownership of your life and all the products of your life.

The second is that nobody has a right to get something from you through the use of physical force or the threat of physical force.

It is way past time for the "Libertarian" Party to stop being ashamed or embarrassed by those two ideas. Be proud! Be loud! Be free!
