CHAPTER FIVE: Horton Willoughby III
An excerpt from the forthcoming novel Ares
(The Feature Article)
We Have Lift-Off,
I mean SSL!
Dear readers and friends,
Yesterday I finished writing Only The Young Die Good,
my 35th novel, I think. following a long interruption by a stroke.
(Take my advice: don’t have a stroke.) It is a sequel to
Sweeter Than Wine. Both are novels about a basically
decent fellow who survived the D-Day landing, but was bitten by a
vampire during World War II and must now struggle to survive as
ethically as he can. His best friend is a small town homicide
detective and the love of his life is the beautiful 300-year-old
Romanian Resistance fighter pilot who “sired” him 75 years ago in a
French wine cellar. Good times. Look for it soon, from Phoenix
Pick.
Coming next: Ares a Ngu Family adventure about the conquest,
settlement, and terraformation of Mars.

CHAPTER FIVE: Horton Willoughby III
An excerpt from the forthcoming novel Ares
by L. Neil Smith
This chapter is about
one of the three sides—colonists (now in revolt) who have been sent
to Mars (essentially to die) by the United Nations and the United
States of (East) America, those governments themselves, who have now
added a company of Marines to enforce their will, and the Pallatian
children of Emerson Ngu who are grimly determined to prevent the
coming tragedy—all struggling for control of the Red Planet.

Judicial Discretion and the Managerial State
by Sean Gabb
Any system of criminal justice worth the name
needs to reconcile humanity with certainty. On the one hand, part of
the function of the criminal law is deterrent. When you know that you
will go to prison for six months if you smash someone’s window, you
may be less inclined to pick up the stone than if you believe you may
get an absolute discharge or a whipping. Another part of the system’s
function is to match severity of sentencing to the perceived gravity
of offences. We need to see that breaking a window is less of a crime
than breaking someone’s nose, and that murder is much more of a crime
than either.

How Libertarians Can Fight Islam
by Paul Bonneau
I’ve been spending a lot of time on gab.ai
lately, mostly because rightists seem more tolerant of the idea of
liberty, than leftists do these days. Every now and then, someone
there who promotes a rightist-collectivist view attacks individualism
or even calls out libertarianism specifically. When this happens I
usually respond with a correction to his (usually straw-man)
argument.

Deep State—The Significance of 1992
by Melinda Pillsbury-Foster
1992 is arguably the most significant year in
the last half of the 20th Century.
But until now you did not really know what
happened then or understand the next 36 years which have sent
America’s economy into a tail spin, enmeshed us in constant war,
made millions homeless, and taken the world to the brink of
disaster.
