Clowns To The Left Of Me ...
(The Feature Article)
Wait and see?
(Tip o'the hat to Jim Woosley for this one)
HOW POWERFUL IS MY GUN?
Now you can determine for yourself your favorite weapon's
power and effectiveness from just a couple of numbers,
thanks to a handy ballistic program written by byte-wizard
Bill St. Clair, and incorporating L. Neil Smith's formula
for “Efficacy.” You will need to enter the actual diameter
of the bullet (.38 special = .357", for example, and .44
Magnum is .429"), its weight in grains Avoirdupois, and
its velocity.

The program will tell you your weapon's power in foot-pounds,
and its “Efficacy” according to Neil’s formula. It will also
tell you the Sectional Density of your bullet, in case you’re
interested.
JUST TO GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE, my favorite carry-piece is a
Glock Model 23, which shoots .40 S&W (sometimes known as
“.40 Liberty”). In it, I use Winchester Silvertip loads
which feature a 155-grain bullet .400" in diameter, driven
at a velocity of 1205 feet per second. The calculator
says that’s 500 foot-pounds for an Efficacy of 63, which
makes it very comparable to the formidable .357 Magnum.

Clowns To The Left Of Me ...
by L. Neil Smith
Away out West in Flyover Country, we have seasonal
contests of athletic prowess that we fondly call rodeos (accent on
the first syllable unless you’re a California poseur). Based on various
practical skills required by horse and cattle ranching, these competitions
customarily pit cowboys against one another, and against large,
powerful animals. Okay, cowgirls, too.

Living In Elfland
by Sarah A. Hoyt
Recently here, one of those times that the comments get
more interesting than the post itself, we came up with the idea that we are
in fact elves. That either time traveling or some weird time-glitch bring
us—or our descendants a few hundred years hence—in contact with people in
the past and allows them a glimpse into our world.

How to Fix Things
by Jim Davidson
Let me be very brief. Things are falling apart, are not
well designed, and their swift demise would be less harmful than their long
slow dissipation. Nothing we do within the existing political system is
sufficient to resolve its inter-tangled problems. Hastening its end isn’t
possible either. Lacking resilience, the natural disasters which can be
readily anticipated won’t be overcome effectively. In order to build a
better world, we can only begin in certain ways. To fix things we have to
survive what is happening and what is coming and be here to build well in
the aftermath.

An Open Letter to Dave Kozak
by L. Neil Smith
A friend of mine recently reminded me of this piece.
It was originally published December 31, 2017:
I suppose a better title for this composition might have
been “Why I Changed My Mind About Open Immigration”. Dave Kozak is an
individual I’ve been arguing with on Facebook about this topic. He holds the
admirably anarcho-libertarian position that borders are essentially
imaginary lines on the map and that those organizations we call
“governments” have no right to prevent people from traveling back and forth
across them at will.
