Reparations For All!
by L. Neil Smith
I have been listening to collectivists of differing
descriptions yammer and whine and bleat about “reparations” for black
slavery since I first became politically aware, going on sixty years now,
even though not a single living American has ever been a slave—not in the
conventional sense, anyway—nor has any living American ever owned slaves.

Changing Gears
by Sarah A. Hoyt
You know, I’m always surprised when I talk to anyone
about how things have changed in the last 20 to 30 years and get something
like “sure, we have computers, but that doesn’t make a big difference. It’s
not like the introduction of the automobile, or flight. Now if we had flying
cars…” It happens every time we’re talking about how technology has changed
life, and yet it still puzzles me, because it’s a form of willful
blindness.

Those who can’t defend themselves
by Harding McFadden
There are many things that separate Liberals and
Conservatives, but for the sake of this little essay, I’d like to dwell on
just one: who they’re willing to kill.

The Lone and Level Sands
A Short Story by L. Neil Smith
What follows is a short story I was commissioned to write for a collection
called Future Washington, edited by Ernest Lilly and published an
amazing fourteen years ago in October 2005, just a few weeks before I’d
finished Ceres, the planned third novel in the “Ngu Family Trilogy”.
In some ways it is a mini-sequel to Ceres, occurring 12 years after
that novel concludes. In others, it is a prequel to a novel I haven’t
written much about yet. It is to be called Rosalie’s World, in which
we follow Llyra Ngu, her husband Morgan Trask and their growing family to
the world her great grandfather Emerson Ngu discovered and named after her
great grandmother.
