Better Sleep Through … Better Lights
Space Station Shut-Eye: New LED Lights May Help Astronauts (and You) Sleep Better
Space Station engineer says indoor lights are making us sick. Here's why
They figured this out just a couple years before I started the Florida Room Renaissance! Full spectrum LED blows florescent tubes away—which flicker and cause some people to have seizures and they just don’t cut it as their efficiency drops off after 6 to 8 months—ditto for halide and sodium bulbs—which is even worse economy for a space station than a basement growing space on Earth where it’s expensive to lift replacement bulbs.
I can attest to the psychological benefits of looking at green plants under full spectrum artificial light in the winter. It can probably make an astronaut’s day on a long tour in orbit or deep space. If they can even build a small wheel with just enough radius for decent spin gravity they could have the equivalent of a Florida Room or even a small scale botanical garden with ponds and waterfalls to really liven things up!
