“Gun control is the idea that it‘s better to see a woman dead in an alley, strangled
with her own pantyhose, than to see her with a gun in her hand.”—T.D. Melrose

Circular Reasoning
by L. Neil Smith
A BLAST FROM THE PAST And now for something completely different. I was watching my second-favorite Harrison Ford movie, Patriot Games, for the 57th time the other night, having just remote-surfed past a channel running Sightings or some other such program, when it occurred to me in what I call a blinding flash of the absurdly obvious: The CIA knows who’s making the crop circles.

How Peculiar
by Sarah A. Hoyt
So, as I’ve mentioned before, I am an introvert. I can fake extrovert. Though honestly, I think part of the way I fake extrovert is by being so introverted I am “eccentric.” Because see, for normal people seeing you walking down the street rocking a hat made entirely out of feathers (not that I’ve ever done that. I’m allergic to feathers, but take it as a metaphor) means you must be an extrovert AND extremely self-confident. They’d never DARE do that. It never occurs to them you just put the first thing that came to hand on your head because it was cold, and it happened to be the feather duster. (You removed the handle because that was just weird.) It also never occurs to them that you don’t realize they’re all staring at you, because you’re trying to figure out just why your character wants you to write him doing THAT.

The Fall of Afghanistan
by Sean Gangol
Well, it has finally come to this. Afghanistan, the country that US forces spent twenty-years trying to secure, has been overrun by the Taliban. Joe Biden in his ever-infinite wisdom decided to withdraw in the most unorderly way possible. I can’t say that I am surprised. For starters I had a feeling that our involvement in Afghanistan was destined to fail, when we changed the original purpose of the mission, which was to avenge the three thousand souls that perished in the attacks on the World Trade Center to nation building. If history has taught us anything, long-term conflicts have never produced good results. On top of that empires have tried to conquer Afghanistan for two thousand years to no avail, which shows that it is one hard nut and it was unlikely that the United States would be the one to crack it.

Ozark Herbal Academy
by Jim Davidson
Recently I was introduced to D’Coda of the Ozark Herbal Academy near Eureka Springs, Arkansas. She says her name “dacoda” and many people say it sounds like the state name Dakota.  She is a  herbalist and teacher who maintains an enormous online database of herbal medicine information.  It has more than 29,000 entries covering herbs, their preparation, diseases and conditions, aspects of human anatomy, and information about healing.  The database links to over 500,000 articles giving even more details.  D’Coda keeps the database up to date every day.

Adventures in Herpetology:
The Florida Room’s so Bright I Gotta Wear Shades

by Jeff Fullerton
This has been a very depressing year. Between the ongoing war on American prosperity and the Covid pandemic and loosing some really great friends—including the late owner and Publisher, L. Neil Smith , I’ve not had much enthusiasm for writing lately. Mostly because—I shamefully admit—I’ve allowed myself to be crippled by my own inertia and inhibitions. Especially ones home front where I’ve let single issues stall me and hold things up. I could have written a dandy installment of the Norseman’s Diaries on that. I may yet do that in the near future.
