Observations of Collectivism
(The Feature Article)
Is it True, or is it CNN?
The Editor’s Notes
by Ken Holder, Editor
Our Mr. Smith swings his mighty hammer (“pen?” …
“keyboard?”) and whacks that nail right square in his
article this issue. That is what it is that is so off about
the … the … none of the commonly-used words for
Political Correctors and/or Slavers are really meaningful
anymore, having been twisted and perverted by those self-same
Enemies of Liberty so as to spread confusion, fear, uncertainty,
and doubt among the thinking classes, so as to advance their agenda
for enslaving everybody.

Observations of Collectivism
by L. Neil Smith
I was reading an article the other day about some guy named
Kris Kobach, who is the Republican Secretary of State for the state of Kansas. It
seems that he has accepted a job writing regularly for Breitbart, which has caused
every “progressive“ head within a thousand miles to explode.

Jerry and Me
by J. Neil Schulman
Jerry Pournelle read the manuscript of
Alongside Night after David Hartwell had given it final
acceptance for publication as a Berkley paperback original and—
at a LASFS meeting—Jerry handed me 30 pages of notes, telling
me that Robert Heinlein had given Larry Niven and him extensive notes
on The Mote in God’s Eye with the admonition, “Pay It Forward.”

How I Got My TV, a Piece of Fiction
by A.X. Perez
I’ve known the Awats for the last fifty years or
more. So when Farah showed up at the counter to pay for a couple of
pounds of ground beef and a loaf of bread I thought nothing of it.

State Censorship, Corporate Censorship: A Libertarian View
by Sean Gabb
Every age we have so far known has been one of censorship. This is
not to say that opinion has been equally constrained in all times and
places. Sometimes, as in the Soviet Union, it has been oppressive and
omnipresent – even extending to an imposition of orthodoxy on
the natural sciences. More often, it has been focussed on perceived
criticisms of the established political and religious order.
Sometimes, dissent has been permitted among the intellectual classes
– especially when expressed in a language unknown to the people
at large, and only punished when communicated to the people at large.
Sometimes, a diversity of political orders has limited any particular
censorship to an area of just a few square hundreds of miles.
Sometimes it has been limited by a general belief in the right of
free expression. But I can think of no time or place where
publication has been absolutely unconstrained.
